General Summary/Purpose
The Communications Associate will carry out and build upon a new communications strategy for the Global Early Adolescent Study, a ten-country global longitudinal research project that examines the relationship between gender norms and health across the adolescent years. The GEAS will also examine the impact of gender-transformative interventions on adolescent health and well-being. The Communications Specialist will serve the critical role of building and implementing a strategy to broaden uptake of GEAS results, both domestically and internationally. In addition, they will work to build the GEAS social media presence to create connections both among GEAS collaborators and with global stakeholders.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop communications plan and
vision
- Develop global messaging plan in collaboration with key partners
- Identify key audiences and develop communications goals for reaching those audiences
- Identify new opportunities for GEAS dissemination and advocacy on an ongoing basis
- Design and execute informational campaigns across digital platforms
- Identify priority days of action (eg, The International Day of the Girl), conferences, and meetings to maximize GEAS reach
- Identify new communications partners at global and national levels
- Stay abreast of the larger landscape of adolescent, gender, and public health research as they relate to young adolescents, gender and adolescent health more broadly
- Facilitate social media trainings for Hopkins Coordinating Centre staff, GEAS partners and youth advisory boards
Minimum Qualifications(Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or related fields
- Three (3) years communications related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Social media communications (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
- Translation of research for non-professional consumption
- Press release and op-ed writing
- Good interpersonal skills in dealing with a variety of constituents including faculty, staff, students, international partners, and funders
- Able to effectively prioritize and work on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines and demonstrate excellent time management skills and efficiency
- Ability to walk up a flight of 18 stairs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
