Position Summary

Repair, replace and service pumps and other plumbing-related equipment.

Essential Job Functions of Position

Work assignments for this position may include any or all of the following plus other related duties as assigned. Employees are expected to use equipment to manufacturer and University standards and to comply with University, KDHE and OSHA policies and regulations. New employees must complete safety training within 6 months of hire.

As assigned or requested via work orders and working from diagrams, schematics, sketches and blueprints or verbal instructions, plan and layout work projects associated with domestic water and waste water, natural gas, compressed gases and vacuum systems and equipment.

Repair, replace and service pumps and other plumbing-related equipment.

Build and/or repair complete low and high pressure piping systems throughout University facilities.

Diagnose plumbing problems and initiate appropriate repairs.

Select and requisition materials appropriate to complete work assignments.

Inspect and clean dining services grease traps on a scheduled basis.

Monthly conduct routine inspection of fire sprinkler system per Preventive Maintenance Schedule. This may include but is not limited to checking pressures, valve position, visible leaks, flushing system.

Locate underground utilities such as natural gas, water, sewer, etc., for dig permits.

Identify and properly handle hazardous materials in accordance with labels on materials; determine proper disposal based on training.

Work with and assist engineers, contractors, consultants and other facilities and University staff, offices, etc. to coordinate plumbing activities.

Clean and maintain tools and equipment.

Record and document completed tasks using Computerized Maintenance Management System software.

Recommend work process improvements to Facilities supervisors and Administrators.

Assist with general maintenance activities as assigned.

Maintain a professional, safe and clean work area.

Provide service support for campus events.

Snow removal duties as assigned.

Assist in relaying information and serve as a resource by answering questions about job assignments.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Journeyman level Plumber. Five years of experience working as a Plumber. Stable/continuous work history. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to read and apply information from schematics and building blueprints. Ability to move and/or maneuver equipment and materials weighing as much as 50 pounds. Ability to work from a ladder and/or a lift. Ability to respond to emergency service calls outside regularly scheduled work hours. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing problems.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Preferred: Hazmat knowledge/training/experience. Welding skills.
Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
Experience with Building Automation Systems ( BAS ).

Licenses, Certifications & Registrations

Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record under University standards.
Obtain within 6 months of hire and then maintain the required Certificate(s), License(s) and/or approvals by local and/or State agencies necessary to perform plumbing and backflow related duties.

Additional Requirements (e.g. Physical Demands)

The necessity to move and/or maneuver materials weighing as much as 50 pounds as well as other hazards associated with plumbing work.

Machines or equipment used regularly in the work of this position. Indicate the frequency with which they are used. Daily: Hand tools, power tools associated with the plumbing trade such as auger and jetter powered drain cleaning machines.
