Position Summary

It is essential for the University Police Officer to maintain high visibility on campus as a deterrent to crime. The employee is required to carry a firearm when on duty. The use of computers and various computer software may be necessary to complete many of the following tasks.

Essential Job Functions of Position

1. Patrol the University campus on foot, on bicycle or in a patrol car watching for activities that violate city ordinance, state statute, federal law or University policies. Intervene in illegal activity and restore order, investigate causative factors, determine and initiate the best course of action to resolve the problem(s). Make arrests when and where necessary.

Patrol campus streets, parking lots and driveways to ensure the proper flow of traffic and control parking on campus. Take appropriate enforcement action when illegally parked vehicles are located.

Check the security of all buildings on campus to ensure they are locked or unlocked as scheduled for each building and to ensure that buildings and contents are secure and all security measures are intact.

2. Following the established format for daily log reports, produce written reports detailing daily activities. Produce detailed offense reports of any crime reported on campus, supplemental investigative reports to record any information gathered as the result of an investigation, arrest reports for prosecution and affidavits for charges as required by the state and District Attorney. Produce accident reports detailing accident investigations as required by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Produce information reports for any other activities on campus.

3. Establish professional contact with the University community: Provide directions to buildings, events and classes. Unlock vehicles for vehicle owners who have locked their keys inside. Escort students who have concerns for their safety to campus locations. Jump start vehicles that will not start. Unlock buildings and classroom doors for students and faculty who are authorized to be inside. Present safety talks to groups and organizations as requested.

4. Attend in-service training to update knowledge and skill in police procedure, firearms proficiency, first aid, CPR, AED and legal issues, and remain in compliance with the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training requirement for no less than 40 hours of in-service training each year.

5. Attend briefings with the supervisor(s) to receive instructions, daily briefing information, legal updates, schedule changes, performance evaluations and general work related information.

Perform additional job related duties as assigned or appropriate.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

Education and Experience

High School Diploma, GED Certificate, or equivalent.

Preferred: Completion of college course work in the criminal justice field.
Independent leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to work any shift/hours as assigned and to respond to emergency call-back in a reasonable amount of time. Proficiency using desktop, windows-based computer operating systems and proven ability to learn and adapt to the use of new computer software.

Demonstrated proficiency in the use of firearms.

Must be able to successfully pass a written examination, physical agility test, polygraph examination, psychological examination, drug testing examination and verbal interview.

Licenses, Certifications & Registrations

Valid class C Driver’s License with acceptable driving record under University standards.
Certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training as mandated by state law at or as soon as CPOST training allows.

Additional Requirements (e.g. Physical Demands)

Must be at least 21 years of age. No arrests for domestic violence, stalking, dating violence or any classification of these crimes. No convictions for any felony crime. This is a “designated safety sensitive position” and will be required to undergo drug testing.
