Assistant Professor of Issues and Crisis Management and Communication (70% Extension, 30% Teaching)

This is a 12-month tenure-track position with responsibilities in Extension, Herbert College of Agriculture, and service. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES

70% Extension

  • Develop, deliver, lead and evaluate a needs-based Extension educational program focused on agricultural issues and crisis management and communications for the agriculture industry and nonprofits that prepares them for proactive issues and crisis planning and post-issue and post-crisis resilience
  • Provide issues and crisis management and communication assistance to Extension agents and specialists
  • Provide input to and serve as an educational resource for regional and/or national groups
  • Plan and conduct a high-quality and impactful applied research program to support their educational program
  • Publish applied research
  • Secure grant funding in support of Extension program
30% Teaching

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to agricultural communications
  • Advise and mentor graduate students
  • Chair and serve on graduate student committees
  • Conduct and publish applied research to support their teaching program
  • Secure grant funding in support of teaching program
Service

  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees
  • Assist with appropriate 4-H and school-based agricultural education activities

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. by employment start date in Agricultural Communications, Communications, Disaster Science, Public Relations, Strategic Communications, or closely related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to publish and present scholarly works
  • Ability to secure grant funding
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; must be self-motivated and directed with the ability to achieve measurable results
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in non-formal or formal settings
  • Ability to mentor and advise graduate students
