Position Information

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Expect to attend evening and weekend events as necessary.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Senior Associate Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Development, works with the Deans and faculty to identify and secure private funding for two Colleges and the University. The Director of Development works with individuals (alumni & friends), foundations and corporations to secure the funding; evaluates fundraising prospects; helps develop solicitation and cultivation strategies and proposals from private sources.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a four-year college/university or commensurate qualifying experience.

Experience: Five years of professional fundraising or sales experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of individual, foundation, and corporate giving; proven success in fundraising or sales-related proposal writing to include correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation; understanding of cultivation and solicitation process; strong interpersonal and communication skills; knowledge of office procedures and records management as it pertains to prospect development; ability to work independently, to be flexible, and to work as a positive team member.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrated success with all phases of either a “major gift” or equivalent experience, understanding of various prospect management software systems; experience in higher education fundraising; public speaking skills/experience; knowledge of Excel and/or Access software and database management. Certificate programs or additional seminars in fundraising techniques and skills preferred.

Certification: Valid Drivers License

Responsibilities

70% - Identify, cultivate and solicit fundraising prospects; recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies of individual/corporate/foundation prospects, working with deans, faculty and volunteers as appropriate; meet with prospects and volunteers, traveling as necessary. Assist deans and faculty in the recognition and prioritization of college and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of college and departmental priorities, college programs, personalities; Cultivate and present proposals to individual, corporate, and foundation prospects; Represent the college at the meetings of various businesses, social and professional organizations; Build college based advisory boards; Write or assist in drafting proposals, grants, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets and other materials as necessary; assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, and accomplishments; Develop, evaluate and refine plans and timetables for regional, departmental or theme assignments; Develop annual business plan for colleges.

10% - Input contact reports regularly and participate in moves management and prospect management systems. Meet or exceed metrics.

10% - Assist with planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs; Provide leadership on specific fundraising events and activities for colleges.

10% - Other duties as assigned.
