Director of Counseling
The mission of the Colorado State University-Pueblo Student Counseling Center is to provide a professional and confidential setting that meets the psychological, emotional, and developmental needs of our students as they pursue their academic goals. The Student Counseling Center will help the student address personal issues that interfere with learning and personal development. The Student Counseling Center also acts as a resource for faculty and staff to assist with their interactions with students. The Counseling Center strives to provide students with opportunities to develop greater self-understanding, identify and solve problems, and improve academic performance through the alleviation of psychological, emotional, and cognitive impediments.
This is a full-time position and is responsible for providing
direct supervision and leadership for the Counseling Center at
CSU-Pueblo. The director assists and directs mental health triage,
brief counseling, referral, consult, outreach, and emergency/crisis
assessment services for CSU-Pueblo undergraduate, graduate and
professional students. This position leads and works closely with
the entire counseling staff, as well as interfacing with the
CSU-Pueblo Health Services team, the Dean of Students Office,
Housing and Residential Life, faculty, families, other campus
departments and community entities. This position reports directly
to the Assistant Dean for Student Health and Well-being. This
position requires a strong background or specialization in one or
more of the following areas: sexual assault and other trauma,
substance abuse, eating and body issues, and ADHD and learning
This position also participates in consultation and outreach within the University community. This position requires flexibility in providing after hour support and care for crisis situations inclusive of consultations.
- Supervise counselors in the counseling center
- Manage the day to day operations of the Counseling Center
- Plan, develop and administer budgets
- Provide vision for counseling center and a strategic planning, development and processes for appropriate protocols
- Attend division meetings as needed with Student Affairs
- Experience with Assessment and counseling best practices inclusive of counseling telehealth therapy techniques and processes
- Provide leadership for counselors
- Review caseloads and assist with treatment plans as needed with counselors
- Work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary campus based health and mental health team.
- Provide psychological and other diagnostic evaluation, risk assessment, counseling and crisis management, brief treatment, and referrals, as indicated, to CSU-Pueblo students (individuals, couples, groups).
- Create clear, thorough and timely documentation in an electronic health record system.
- Conduct mental health/psychological evaluations and assessments.
- Provide individual and group psychotherapy.
- Provide crisis intervention services.
- Share on call, intake, and emergency responsibilities with other staff members.
- Provide back-up coverage for the Counseling Center as needed.
- Maintain case management to ensure that patient dispositions are successfully completed.
- Document and maintain timely and accurate client records.
- Provide campus based clinical services.
- Maintain current knowledge regarding professional practices, ethics, and laws.
- Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff regarding mental health/behavioral and student life issues.
- Consult with the Dean of Students and Pack Cares Chair regarding students with concerning behaviors.
- Communicate with University personnel and other concerned individuals, such as family members, guardians and/or involved parties within HIPAA guidelines.
- Receive and/or provide clinical supervision as assigned.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings.
- Participate in Counseling, Student Affairs and University Committees as assigned.
- Provide outreach activities to the University community, (trainings, presentations, crisis response).
- Provide support and information regarding crisis situations to the Behavioral Intervention Team ( Pack Cares)
- Assist with training of faculty and staff regarding self-harm behaviors
- Attend continuing education opportunities to enhance knowledge base and maintain licensure and/or certification, if applicable.
- Provide crisis intervention by telephone or on-campus in the event a student is imminently a danger to self or others and arrange transport for immediate evaluation and treatment in a safe environment for the student; inclusive of completing documentation of behaviors, impression, acuity of student need and reasons for transport
- Other duties as assigned.
- PSY D, Ph.D, or Ed.D in clinical, educational Psychology.
- Licensed as a Psychologist by the Colorado State Board of Psychologist Examiners or eligible for licensure in the State of Colorado within six months of hire.
- Excellent grasp of psychopathology, diagnostic systems, risk assessment and management.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and respond to complex, urgent situations in a timely manner while exercising sound judgment, discretion, and diplomacy.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity to a wide range of personal diversity and multicultural issues, including trauma-informed care.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Specialized training in one or more of the areas of crisis intervention, sexual assault or other trauma, substance abuse, and learning disabilities.
- Experience supervising and leading a team or former director of a counseling area
- Experience in risk assessment, crisis assessment and management, mental health triage, brief psychotherapy and group treatment approaches
- Experience using a variety of screening and assessment instruments.
- Experience working with multi-cultural clients and an understanding of inclusion within a college setting.
- Experience speaking and presenting to groups of individuals about resources, mental health issues, and interacting with constituent groups- staff, faculty, students and community partners.
- Experience in working with clients with high risk mental health issues.
- 1 to 2 years previous college mental health experience, as well as demonstrated experience working with the issues noted in the position description
- Experience utilizing an electronic health record.
- Strong computer, research, data management, and outcome assessment skills.
- 5 or more years prior clinical experience in a multidisciplinary clinic setting, especially college or community mental health
