Director of Collection Strategies (Associate or Full Librarian)

The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Director of Collection Strategies. The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources & Scholarly Communication. The incumbent will cultivate a culture of assessment for a broader concept of library content that includes general research collections and advocacy for Open Access.
The University of California Libraries is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in advancing Open Access and is well on its way to integrating its open values into its collection strategies. This position provides leadership for the Collection Strategies Department including the direct supervision of a team of collaborative, dynamic, and service-oriented personnel comprised of two Collection Strategists, an Analytics Coordinator, and a Library Assistant. The mission of the Collection Strategies Department is to explore and implement strategic approaches that effectively steward the library’s investment in research collections and scholarly content, and to increase the impact and reach of the UCSB’s scholarship by actively supporting, innovating, and advancing open and sustainable models for knowledge generation, dissemination, and publishing.
Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources & Scholarly Communication, the Director:
Leads the development of library engagement in emerging and transformative collection development and scholarly communications models, and promotes sustainable publishing models and open strategies in support of current UCSB needs; and participates in developing and implementing UCSB Library policies and infrastructure around Open Access and transformative collection models.
Implements a dynamic, strategic vision and provides leadership in planning and managing all aspects of the Collection Strategies department, including employee supervision, training, coaching, and professional guidance to direct reports; and provides effective departmental management through development and implementation of initiatives, and ensuring accountability-driven performance expectations.
Oversees budget allocations, expenditures, and procedures for developing and maintaining sustainable library collections.
Collaboratively develops and implements policies, procedures, and guidelines for lifecycle management of research collections and content in all formats; and provides general oversight for selection of content for the general collections in all subject areas, including areas of distinction.
Coordinates decision-making on behalf of the UCSB Library regarding additions, renewals, and cancellations of University of California shared collection content; and provides leadership to configure the library’s physical collections for maximum and sustainable access, in the context of UC Shared Print collections, UC shared storage facilities, and regional and national collection initiatives to maximize space and provide optimal collection access.
Oversees the assessment activities of the Collection Strategies Department; and provides leadership for the implementation of evidence-based approaches and processes to analyze, acquire, assess, and evaluate library collection and content.
Builds intensely collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the university and the library system; provides effective communication to library and UCSB-wide stakeholders on new and existing content; actively collaborates with all library units involved in the development and maintenance of library collections and content; and collaborates with Directors of Special Research Collections, Research & Engagement, and Teaching & Learning on effective and efficient outreach strategies to UCSB faculty and researchers.
Represents UCSB on system-wide committees and ad-hoc groups related to collections initiatives; and participates in general administrative duties, library-wide activities, committees, special projects, and library programs.
At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, OR at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field; and
At time of application, at least three years’ experience in academic collection development.

Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and manage projects;
Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders in developing collections;
Ability to analyze, implement, and adapt to evolving technologies;
Evidence of increasing professional and/or scholarly achievement;
Excellent organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects;
Effective oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
Excellent problem-solving, time-management, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment;
Demonstrated commitment to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and the community;
Academic degree in a related field and/or advanced coursework at the post-graduate level;
Three years of significant program or departmental management experience;
Experience with evaluation, analysis, negotiation, selection, licensing, and acquisition of library content in all formats;
Demonstrated understanding of the changing environment for scholarly communications and open access publishing models; and
Strong data analysis skills including gathering, interpreting, and presenting information.
