Job Description

The Director of UX Design and Assessment is an essential part of the IT Experience & Engagement (ITE²) unit of the Division of Information Technology. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will report to the Executive Director of ITE² and will lead and work closely with each functional area to improve user experience through designing and evaluating user-facing platforms, services, and mechanisms of engagement. To this end, the Director of UX Design and Assessment will conduct user research to discover users’ needs, wants, and limitations and turn the user research findings into design solutions. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will also provide guidance and expert advice to other units within the Division on user experience related topics and assist in developing UX-centered strategies. A key responsibility of this position is to drive improvement of the user experience across the Division’s various platforms and mechanisms of user engagement in order to provide University value for all Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and affiliates who interact with IT systems and services.

The Director of UX Design and Assessment will also provide leadership and support to the Division in defining and assisting in the execution of assessment programs where requested for Division activities. For applicable activities, this position will consult with senior leaders and create a framework to measure outcomes and enable data-informed decision making. These engagements may also include assessment education and consultation, administration of assessment processes, data collection, and data analysis.

The Director of UX Design and Assessment will identify the educational needs around user-centered design and strategic assessment, develop and conduct educational programs for VT staff and students on these topics.

The Director of UX Design and Assessment will be able to operate both strategically and operationally across a range of areas. The role is expected to synthesize diverse viewpoints to balance organizational operations and interests with user experience requirements, needs, and desires. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will seek to identify areas of strategic value to improve the user experience, will serve as a leader and knowledge expert on our users, and will strive to enable a consistent user experience within the ITE² unit. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will be an ambassador who seeks to grow the footprint and return on investment of user experience design within the Division. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will assist team members in bringing user-impacting projects from concept to execution and implementation. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will provide expert guidance and contribute to systematically collect and analyze data about the operational effectiveness of the services and the programs provided by the Division. The Director of UX Design and Assessment will design and conduct educational programs to promote user centered design approach and value focused assessment.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Technology or related field.
- 30 months experience in web development (HTML, CSS, and Javascript).
- 54 months teaching experience at college level.
- 48 months experience with visual and multimedia design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere.
- 24 months experience with assisting and supporting faculty and students in the use of technology tools and the integration of these tools in all phases of their instructional and research activities.
- 12 months experience in working proactively as part of a team and deliver work with limited need for oversight.
- 36 months experience with key programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- 6 months experience in conducting user experience design evaluations.
