In order to advance knowledge and evidence on key questions about inequality, the Poverty and Inequality Research Lab (PIRL) is dedicated to facilitating interdisciplinary, mixed-methods research to inform policy related to poverty, housing, education and families. PIRL brings together Johns Hopkins University faculty and students, research partners, local organizations, policy makers, and community members to utilize rigorous research to inform debates on reducing poverty and inequality and increase social mobility for families. The purpose of the Sr. Research Program Coordinator position is to support the various research projects at PIRL through conducting data collection and analysis, assisting with manuscript writing, and carrying out other administrative tasks. The Sr. Research Program Coordinator will also engage in project and task management, with the possibility of supervising undergraduate research assistants. The program in turn will provide the Sr. Research Program Coordinator the opportunity to expand their network and engage in policy research related to poverty, housing, families, and education. TheSr. Research Program Coordinatorfor the Poverty and Inequality Research Lab (PIRL) at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) will provide program coordination and support in accomplishing PIRL’s goals. This position reports to the director of the PIRL.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Organize, prioritize, and track the daily operations and developmental progress of multiple assigned projects, maintaining all files and related data.
  • Execute project management processes and methodologies to ensure timely delivery.
  • Conduct data collection and data analysis. This includes recruiting interview respondents via phone or e-mail; following proper Institutional Review Board procedure for obtaining consent from participants in the research study.
  • Assist with manuscript reading and writing.
  • Proactively communicate, collaborate, and build relationships with PIRL leadership and staff, scholars and other stakeholders- both internal and external.
  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants assigned to various research tasks, when applicable.
  • Support PIRL director in maintaining and overseeing project budgets.
  • Play a lead role in organizing and convening meetings and events- both online and in-person.
  • Assist with managing events on-site, ensuring that operations are in accordance with goals and objectives; maintains relationships with attendees and resolves or manages resolution of major problems and issues as they arise.
  • Serve as contact with external network of schools, associations, organizations as required.
  • Drafts professional communications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degreein a sociology, economics, policy or public health-related field. Master’s / PhD degree preferred.
  • Threeyears of related experience required, preferably including program management and/or project management.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Excellent ability to manage time and projects with competing priorities.
    High level of interpersonal skill, written and oral communication necessary to effectively interact with colleagues at all operational levels. Experience with academic writing and data analysis. Self-motivated and comfortable working independently, as a team leader, and as a team member. Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with capacity to deliver quality work product within the required deadline. Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students. Proven aptitude with the use of Microsoft Office applications.

Work background should include a combination of the following:

  • Proven, successful project management experience.
  • Track record of managing a complex workload.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience working on mixed methods research projects.
  • Working with diverse populations of students.
  • Familiarity with diverse cultures and diversity related program design.
  • Advising or mentoring students.
  • Planning and managing events.
  • Supporting the development of curricula, initiatives or projects.
  • Managing people.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
