Dean, James Madison College

Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Dean of James Madison College (JMC), an undergraduate liberal arts college of public affairs. Madison College, founded in 1967, is one of three residential colleges in the university committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and close interactions between students and faculty. The college has its own tenure-system faculty of accomplished scholars, and its own curriculum, while also benefiting from the resources, opportunities, substantive breadth, and curricula of a major research university. The college’s faculty are trained in American studies, anthropology, economics, English literature, history, humanities, philosophy, political science, science and technology studies, and sociology. The college offers four interdisciplinary majors, Comparative Cultures and Politics, International Relations, Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, and Social Relations and Policy, and participates in multiple cross- unit degree programs offered within the university.

The Dean is JMC’s chief executive officer and reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean will provide vision and humane leadership to JMC, overseeing academic programs, financial affairs, development, student success, personnel, program evaluation, community engagement, and facilities of the college. In addition, the Dean of the college has unique responsibilities fostering community within a residential college. The Dean represents the college within the university and in interactions with the college’s highly engaged and accomplished students and alumni. Applicants must hold an earned doctorate or equivalent advanced degree with an established record of scholarly and teaching accomplishments and meet the standards for appointment at the rank of professor (with tenure) in the university. They must demonstrate a commitment to the college’s mission, administrative experience, and effective and engaged communication skills. Applicants should address their demonstrated abilities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion; faculty development and scholarship; and institutional development and fundraising. We seek a candidate committed to bold advocacy and inclusive leadership.

All inquiries, nominations, and applications (consisting of a letter of interest and CV) should be submitted to Korn Ferry at the e-mail address below. Further materials may be requested at a later date. For priority consideration, please submit application materials in confidence by September 30, 2020.
