The controls technician perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties to perform installation, programming, inspection, testing, and repair of pneumatic, electric, electronic, and digital control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hoods, exhaust systems, chilled and hot water systems, and other HVAC building controls. Should have or acquire the ability to troubleshoot and effect minor repairs on refrigeration systems.

The position includes the efficient operation of HVAC controls and campus energy management system ( EMS ) to meet both comfort and conservation requirements.

Education Required HS Diploma or equivalent Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Education Preferred

Some college courses in controls, electronics, mechanical, or refrigeration

Experience Required 2 years Type of Experience

Related experience with a combination of formal training and hands-on experience in HVAC controls, energy management systems, metering devices (temperature, pressure, flow and electrical), instrumentation (calibration of 4-20ma current loops, RTDs, flow and pressure transmitters), electronic and pneumatic process control.

This experience should include configuration and startup as well as installation and should be specific to at least one of the following: Siemens Building Technologies, Tridium (Niagara AX), Circon Systems, Invensys Controls, TAC Controls and Automation, Distech Controls, Allerton Controls, and Phoenix Controls. Experience of similar nature with other HVAC building controls systems may also be considered.

Substitution for Experience Requirement Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience Preferred

Fluency with programming HVAC building controls systems, especially Siemens Building Technologies, Tridium (Niagara AX), and TAC Controls and Automation

License/Certification Required

- Refrigerant Transition & Recovery Certification or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of being hired
- Must have valid Texas Drivers License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) with no more than three moving violations within the past 36 months and no citations for Driving While Intoxicated ( DWI ) or Driving Under the Influence ( DUI )

License/Certification Preferred

Texas State Air Conditioning License

Skills Required

- Interpersonal skills
- Proficient communication skills both oral and written
- Knowledge of electrical and/or pneumatic prints
- Follow instructions and work with multiple priorities

Skills Preferred

- Electronic repairs down to the component level
- Ability to read drawings and blueprints
- Complete understanding of building, heating, and chill water systems and the controls associated with them

Internal / External Contacts

Internal: Contact with all personnel in operations, technical services, maintenance, and various individuals on campus while working in the buildings

External: Contact with vendors, contractors, and service representatives regarding various equipment and systems

Physical Demands

- Position requires moderate to heavy physical activity
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time
- Must be able to lift equipment loads (up to 80 pounds) and be able to carry objects up to 50 pounds
- Must use stairs and ladders frequently
- Conditions include need to walk through tunnels and climb over piping and equipment
- Must use power tools and equipment

Working Conditions

- Work requires exposure to high pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electricity, rotating equipment and other potentially dangerous equipment
- Extended hours and call-outs will be necessary when problems develop that require special attention. Modified work schedule may also be required. Will be “on call” on a regular schedule
- Must frequently work in confined spaces such as mechanical rooms, tunnels and Central Plant which are not air conditioned or heated. Will require working in dusty, dirty and wet conditions on occasion
- Hearing protection, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes may be required as deemed necessary for safety in various areas on campus

Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

Essential Functions

- Completes non-complex work requests for the installation, inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electrical and electronic control equipment related to air conditioning, fume hood and exhaust systems
- Accurately documents work performed
- Finds, confirms and implements methods to fully utilize and improve existing systems to assure the most efficient overall campus energy utilization
- Performs a daily review of the system, troubleshoots and makes sure necessary changes are made in programming and calibration to assure proper operation of controls and instrumentation
- Identifies energy conservation measures (ECM’s) throughout the campus by making visual inspections and identifying deficiencies
- Assists with troubleshooting and analysis to assure maximum reliability and efficiency
- Performs all other duties as assigned
