The Mathematics and Computer Science Department at SMSU has created a new online graduate certificate in cyber security (pending System approval), with plans for a Master’s degree in cyber security for Fall 2021.  In addition, a new bachelor’s program in data science is being launched Fall 2020 with preparation for an online master’s program in data science underway.  For at least the first semester of the appointment, the primary responsibility of this new position will be contributing to the development of curricula for these new programs.  Duties also include teaching courses in these new programs as well as undergraduate courses in computer science, and participating in department and university activities, such as program review, supervising undergraduate research, and various regional outreach activities.  Faculty are also expected to participate in student advising, contribute to student growth and development, evaluate student performance, assessment, engage in scholarly activity, and perform service to the University community.

Salary and Terms:  Full-time, 9-month tenure-track position.  Salary placement is based on education and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Computer Science or Mathematics or a closely related field; applicants within one year of completion will be considered.
  • Coursework or experience in cyber security.
  • Evidence of successful teaching and demonstrated experience with assessment of student learning.
  • Student-centered approach to education and a commitment to helping grow the programs within the department.
  • Demonstrated commitment or proven strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment; demonstrated ability or proven strategies to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds is required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must have an understanding and appreciation for liberal education.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Ability to teach in the area of data science.
