Job Summary

The Department of Applied Mathematics seeks to hire a post-doctoral researcher to engage in collaborative research with domain experts across campus helping them apply statistics and data science to answer their research questions, help develop foundational research in the micro- and macro-theory of collaboration for statistics and data science, mentor graduate and undergraduate students in interdisciplinary collaboration, and teach one statistics/data science course per semester. Successful candidates will sustain a passion for increasing the extraordinary impact of statistics and data science by collaborating on projects that benefit society.

Who We Are

The Department of Applied Mathematics roots go back to the turn of the last century when it originally was the Department of Engineering Mathematics. The Department teaches thousands of students and has a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences. It has 24 tenured or tenure track faculty. In addition, there are 9 full-time instructors, more than 110 graduate students including approximately 40 teaching assistants, about 211 applied mathematics majors, 117 statistics majors, 119 minors and a growing BS-MS program.

The Department strives to be a leading program of applied mathematics. In 2018, the US News & World Report ranked the unit’s graduate program 14th in the nation. The unit also ranked positively in many measures by the National Research Council in its 2010 decadal survey.

Our faculty have won numerous awards including four being named fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two being named fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two being named fellows of the American Physical Society, two Guggenheim Fellows, American Statistical Association Fellow, Sloan Fellow, and CU-Boulder: Hazel Barnes Prize, Professor of Distinction, winners of numerous CU-Boulder faculty awards, and two distinguished research lecturers.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The post-doctoral researcher will work closely with Dr. Eric Vance in LISA, the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis within the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Applied Mathematics. LISA is a statistics and data science collaboration laboratory that:

• Trains students to become effective interdisciplinary collaborators.
• Provides research infrastructure for the campus community to enable and accelerate data-driven research and decision-making.
• Teaches short courses and workshops to improve statistical skills and data literacy widely.

The post-doctoral researcher will also have opportunities to engage with the LISA 2020 Program, a global network of statistics and data science collaboration laboratories building capacity to transform evidence into action for development worldwide.

The post-doctoral researcher will initially receive intensive training in the extant micro- and macro-theory of statistical collaboration and will assist and then lead the education and training of students in effective interdisciplinary collaboration. We hope that the post-doctoral researcher will be able to extend our theories of collaboration in statistics to a more robust theory of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific application to data science.

This position is for one-year starting July 1, 2021 and is expected to be renewed for 2 more years (3 years total).

The salary for this position is $63,000.

What We Require

• PhD in statistics, data science, quantitative psychology or related field (conferred by August 2021).
• Experience collaborating with domain experts from a variety of disciplines.
• TA or teaching experience.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Experience consulting/collaborating on at least 10 projects in which the candidate worked with domain experts to apply statistics/data science to answer their research questions or make data-driven business or policy decisions.
• Experience mentoring others in statistics/data science consulting or collaboration.
