The Aquatics Coordinator reports to and assists the Assistant Director for Aquatics with the management of the Recreation Services Aquatic facilities and programs. The Coordinator has personnel management responsibilities that include assisting with the training, development and daily supervision of 80 lifeguards, swim instructors and aquatic supervisors. They will assist with developing and supervising a diverse array of aquatic programs that engage a broad spectrum of students and the university community. The Coordinator assists with facility operations and the development and implementation of aquatic emergency action plans.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree Required, Master’s degree preferred in recreation administration, sport management, leisure studies, physical education, kinesiology, or comparable degree

• Minimum 2 years’ experience managing aquatic facilities and lifeguards

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Instructor, First Aid/ CPR / AED Instructor Certifications Required, WSI certification preferred

Job Specific Qualifications

• Must possess strong communication skills

• Knowledgeable in all aspects of pool management and emergency action planning and procedures

• Competent in lifeguarding and aquatic safety skills

• Ability to train/teach others

Responsibilities

• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule and perform payroll functions for approximately 80 lifeguards and lifeguard supervisors.

• Assist in the training, supervision, development, and payroll functions of Swim Instructors, Lifeguarding Instructors, and CPR Instructors. Develop and oversee monthly lifeguard staff in-service training program utilizing involvement from student staff. Ensure appropriate staffing for all aquatic programs and activities. Act as supervisor or lifeguard on duty as necessary. Assist in development of a comprehensive aquatic program; including swim lessons and health and safety programs. Assist with creating and conducting a Safety Training program for department student staff to include offering CPR / AED /First Aid classes, lifeguard training certification and re-certification classes. Maintain department certification database and all safety training equipment.

• Manage multiple aquatic facilities to ensure safe consistent operations that exceed applicable county and state health codes and regulations. Assist with maintaining pool equipment and cleanliness of pool area.

• Collaborate with other departments and student organizations to offer creative and innovative programs and events including clubs, intramurals, late night activities and co-department sponsored events. Market, coordinate, and supervise programs and events as needed.

• Assist in creating, editing and implementing aquatic area emergency action procedures. Assist with debriefing incidents and updating procedures as necessary.
