The Assistant Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Office of Student Living ( OSL ) is a full time professional staff member responsible for leading and furthering departmental initiatives connected to intercultural competence, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Assistant Director designs and delivers exceptional and innovative intercultural competence training & development for all OSL staff (students and full-time). This position also leads the development and implementation of the student-focused intercultural competence goals, outcomes, and strategies of the residential curriculum. The incumbent will engage in assessment and address bias-related incidents.

The Assistant Director will directly supervise four graduate assistants that support intercultural competence and inclusion work in the department, as well as provides functional supervision for 18 residence directors in the area of intercultural competence. The Assistant Director works closely with department leadership to develop and employ strategies that promote inclusive residential environments for students as well as an inclusive departmental culture for all staff. The position will also oversee major departmental initiatives such as the Student of Color Leadership Retreat and the International Student Leadership Retreat.

Qualifications

Assistant Directors must be well versed in all aspects of residential living, student development theory and emergency response such as:

• Bias Education and Response
Intercultural Competence Development
Theory and Models Relating to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Additionally, demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following specialized areas in residence life in addition to the general knowledge of all other areas:

• Staff Supervision and Support

• Staff Training and Development

• Counseling/Advisement

• Education/Programming/Student Development

• Leadership Development

• Residential Curriculum / Residence Education

• Healthy Living and Decision Making

• Alcohol and Other Drug Education

• Judicial and Conflict Management

The Assistant Director also supports the development of inclusive communities and demonstrates intercultural competency in race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ability, gender, gender identity expression, sexual orientation, religion and national origin.

Educational Requirements: (minimum)

• Master’s Degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field required plus 4 years of progressive experience in Residence Life/Student Affairs.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Supervision and evaluation of 4 graduate-level staff members

• Success in establishing intercultural competence training and development model for the Department

• Success in establishing an intercultural competence strategies for the OSL Blueprint

• Success in implementation of the OSL Blueprint

• Success in crisis response

Responsibilities

• Trains, supervises, and evaluates 4 graduate assistants.

• Provides functional supervision for 18 Residence Directors in the areas of intercultural competence, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Provides professional development and coaching opportunities for staff in their line of supervision.

• Leads regular staff meetings.

• Engages in performance management processes as needed; partners with Human Resources and/or the Higher Education academic program as needed.

• Meets individually with direct reports on a weekly basis.

• Develops and enacts a plan to foster team development and manage team conflict.

• Maintains approachability and availability for all staff (including student staff) in their line of supervision.

• Ensures that direct reports develop strong student engagement and intercultural competence skills.

• Engages in culturally competent supervision practices.

• Departmental leadership for intercultural competence initiatives

• Provide leadership for the vision and day-today implementation of a comprehensive training & development program for all OSL staff to develop strong intercultural competence skills.

• Leads training sessions for OSL professional and para-professional staff related to intercultural competence, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Provides expertise and input on all staff recruitment and hiring processes to ensure that processes are open to and engage a diverse candidate pool, and review processes for active and implicit bias.

• Assess all training and development activities, as outlined in the OSL Assessment Plan.

• Develops a communication plan for OSL intercultural competence, diversity, equity, and inclusion training and development activities.

• Leads the OSL Departmental Climate Assessment Team

• Chairs the OSL Intercultural Competence Development Committee.

• Intentionally connects with student leaders, student staff, and general students.

• Assist with creating and reviewing policy for the Office of Student Living.

• Represent the Office of Student Living on search committees, divisional committees, and campus committees as needed.

• Serve as a liaison with campus offices and partners as directed.

• Intercultural Competence Student Engagement & Bias Response

• Provide leadership on the implementation of the OSL Blueprint in the area of intercultural competence

• Develop strategies for residential environments that assist students in developing intercultural competence.

• Provides leadership to create and implement the annual Student of Color Leadership Retreat.

• Provides leadership to create and implement the annual International Student Leadership Retreat.

• Conducts and disseminates assessment related to intercultural competence initiatives.

• Partners with the Manager of Bias Education to address, track, and assess bias-related incidents.

• Serves as a liaison for the OSL with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Disability Cultural Center, the LGBT Resource Center, and the Center for International Services.

• Provides both theoretical and practical expertise in intercultural competence and in the development of inclusive residential communities.

• Actively support the OSL Blueprint internally, and to external stakeholders.

• Engage with external partners to develop and implement strategies for the OSL Blueprint.

• Student Support and Crisis Management

• Serves in an on-call rotation with leadership in the Office of Student Living. When on call the Assistant Director is responsible for providing support and coordination to OSL on-call Tier One staff (RDs) for all residential students (8,000 students) as well as coordinating support for off-campus residential students as necessary (12,000 students).

• Follows up with students of concern in both crisis and non-crisis situations in a caring, timely and effective manner.

• Utilizes Oranges Success to and works with Residence Directors on their utilization of Orange Success to identify and respond to students.

• Refers student cases to the Behavioral Consultation Committee and the Threat Assessment Management Team as necessary; provides information and follow-up for OSL representatives to these teams.

• Responds to inquiries and questions from parents / families; partners with students, parents, and families to troubleshoot situations.

• Partners with Dean of Students (Student Rights and Responsibilities, Parent and Family Services, Dean of Students) and on campus (Counseling, Public Safety, academic affairs, etc.) to provide support and referral to students.

• Coaches direct and indirect reports on student support and crisis management response and follow-up.

• Engages in professional development and learning specifically related to cultural competence, diversity, inclusion, and/or social justice. This is to maintain professional skills, stay abreast of national trends and best practices, and maintain high visibility of Syracuse University for potential candidates.

• Engages in professional development activities, both on-campus as well as with regional / national professional organizations.

• Determines, in partnership with supervisor, what learning goals and opportunities to take part in. Provides a summary of how learning is being incorporated into practice.

• Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.

• Serves on University, Divisional, and Departmental committees as requested.

• Participates in Syracuse University and Division Enrollment and the Student Experience staff development, orientation sessions, and on-boarding sessions.
