Job Summary:Reporting to the supervisor of mechanical and electrical services, the HVAC mechanic will be responsible for maintenance and repair of all mechanical systems and temperature control work at the College. Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly, Support Staff Appointment

Reporting to the supervisor of mechanical and electrical services, the HVAC mechanic will be responsible for maintenance and repair of all mechanical systems and temperature control work at the College. The HVAC mechanic must work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect, maintain, and service cooling towers, condensers, compressors, chillers, heat pumps, motors, air handlers, fume hoods, fans, control systems, and other heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems
  • Maintain Energy Management System (EMS) including repairs, scheduling, and troubleshooting
  • Schedule equipment, start/stop equipment, and perform other EMS responsibilities as assigned
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures
  • Safely operate tools and equipment necessary to perform job duties
  • Respond to emergency calls as necessary and serve in a rotating on call pool; able to independently assess situations and form a plan for remedy; able to respond within a 45-minute window.
  • Independently respond to work orders and requests
  • Maintain all preventative maintenance (PM) records and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) records/updates
  • Perform work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
  • Coordinate work with other shops as necessary
  • Notify and/or obtain advice from the supervisor of mechanical and electrical services or call for assistance as may be appropriate in any situation
  • Work to ensure customer comfort levels in all campus buildings
  • Sustain proper chemical balance on all closed water systems
  • Maintain pool water chemical balance, temperatures, and associated equipment
  • Identify and tag all new equipment installed
  • Support other trades as required and assist with heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, and other similar problems
  • Make recommendations to supervisor regarding improvements and problems
  • Maintain the tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a clean, neat, and orderly condition
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
  • One of the following applicable licenses is preferred: Maine State Plumbing License, Maine State Limited Electrical License or better, Maine State Propane/Gas, or Maine State Oil Burners License; education and experience may be substituted for licensure, should obtain license within 6 months
  • Mechanical knowledge and ability in the operation, maintenance, adjustment, and service of the mechanical equipment and systems generally used in institutional buildings
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain and repair plumbing systems
  • Capable in HVAC control systems, pneumatic, and Direct Digital Control (DDC)
  • Experience with water to air, and water to water heat pumps required; geothermal heat pump experience is a plus
  • Ability to read and understand plan specifications, technical documentation, and quickly learn new systems
  • Basic computer skills are preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with a high level of motivation
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are critical
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision, as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

This position has significant interactions with faculty, staff, students, and other outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to perform the essential functions.

Position hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime as necessary to support operations. General indoor and outdoor facilities and campus environment. Must be able to walk, climb stairs and ladder, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to climb or crawl into small spaces, including manholes, steam pits, mechanical rooms, and other spaces as required to perform the requirements of the position. Driving of College vehicles required. Computer and tool usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
