General Summary

This position provides information technology services for the Energetic Research Group, a Center operated by the Whiting School of Engineering.

Essential Job Functions

  • Analysis and Requirements Gathering
    • Define complex business/clinical/education problems by meeting with clients to observe and understand current processes and the issues related to those processes. Provide written documentation of findings to share with the client and other IT colleagues.
    • Gather complex system requirements by meeting with clients and researching existing technology to understand the business requirements and possible solutions for new applications.
  • Design and Development
    • Develop detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing project scope and milestones for complex projects in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software lifecycle standards.
    • Write functional/technical specifications from the complex system requirements, putting them into functional and technical descriptions for use by programmers and business analysts to develop technical solutions.
    • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for complex application development tasks.
    • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledgebase system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.
    • Provide monitoring and guidance in application design and development to more junior staff.
    • Provide thought leadership in designing and developing innovative integrated solutions.
  • Project lead for multiple simultaneous application development projects for ERG and ERG’s government agency customers. Establish context, requirements, and then implement solutions, determining platform, coding, and security standards for the projects.
  • Develop new functionality for existing in-house software applications and websites: Document Library Search Engine, Drupal/WordPress modules like: Small Teams portal application, Subscription Management portal, Customer Management portal.
  • Testing and Documentation
    • Create and document complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
    • Test all changes by using the appropriate complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
    • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.
  • Implementation and Maintenance
    • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
    • Monitor changes and resolve complex problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
    • Provide support by investigating and resolving issues, including complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.
  • Evaluate and recommend products/services for maintaining and improving computer systems and network infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement security standards for the network, servers and workstations.
  • Administer enterprise databases (MySQL, MS SQL, MS Access), web application (Drupal, WordPress, IIS and Apache), and other application servers.
  • Team member for configuration and maintenance of Cisco ASA firewall.
  • Provide mentoring to LAN Administrator and assist LAN Administrator when they are not available or when there is an overflow of requests.
  • Maintain office file and application servers (physical and virtual), Hyper-V, Active Directory, Exchange, MS SQL, and Windows HPC cluster.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications. Additional education may substitute for experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science or Information Systems.
  • 6+ years of experience preferred.
  • Experience in server support and familiarity with diverse Operating Systems.
  • Experience with commonly used productivity software products (MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Experience with MS Visual Studio and other development suites.
  • Experience mentoring junior IT staff.

Certifications

Industry certifications from Cisco, Microsoft and other vendors are desirable.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Ability to work independently in a complex environment with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Prior work experience with Linux servers, Cisco routers, MS Windows Server, MS SQL, MySQL, Apache, Drupal, programming languages (PHP, VB, Java, C#, JQuery, Javascript, Symfony), programming tools (MS Visual Studio).
  • Familiarity with project management and systems analysis & design.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must demonstrate strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing: Short periods of time.
  • Walking: Often; navigation and egress around office suite areas and in narrow areas for setting computer equipment.
  • Sitting: On average about ¾ each work day
  • Keyboarding: Write support documentation, memos, email, researching on the Internet.
  • Lifting: Some heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds) of computer equipment.
  • Reaching: Retrieve or move computer and other equipment. Requires safe and proper use of elevation devices (step ladders and stools).

Permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining a U.S. Government personal security clearance consistent with ERG contractual and industrial security requirements.

Some travel required.

Position’s roles & interactions:

This position will interact heavily with Internal staff in Admin, IT, Mgmt., and Research areas. Also, this position will occasionally interact with Gov’t and Industry customers of the Center. Our customers include: NASA, DoD, and Industry working in various Energetics fields. We are a small office; this position will have lead responsibility for all aspects of assigned projects. Supervision assistance will include reviewing defined project scope, goals, user requirements, testing and user training procedures/documentation. This position will require someone who can work without daily supervision. Status of each project will be reviewed with the supervisor once each week.

Specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible:

This position will be developing application modules which will be deployed on Drupal and WordPress portal websites. The applications vary. Examples include:

  • Customer Verification Process; an application process for potential customers to request user accounts on the portal websites. Each customer must meet specific criteria before receiving an account because some data stored on the portal is restricted (i.e. Not Publicly Releasable). Center Admin staff must be able to view status of each request and manage the request as needed to work it through the verification process.
  • Subscription Management portal application; used by Admin staff to administrate subscriptions to online content that customers will access in the Portal. Will also have an ecommerce component to allow customers to purchase renewable subscriptions (annually).
  • Customer Management portal application; used by Admin staff to administrate customer portal accounts.
