A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic success. Responsible to provide individual and group short-term counseling and crisis intervention to undergraduate and graduate students. This position also involves consultation with the Student Health Center and campus staff regarding mental health issues.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts intake interviews with students who request counseling services.
  • Administer a variety of tests that may include aptitude, skills and personality assessments.
  • Provide alcohol and depression screenings
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students on a scheduled basis or through crisis intervention.
  • Provides clinical supervision to practicum students.
  • Provides outreach workshops and lectures.
  • Maintains up-to-date clinical notes on clients and supervisees.
  • Consults with supervisors and staff as needed.
  • Acts as a campus resource on mental health and wellness issues.
  • Attends training seminars and staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Interacts with staff and students in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Refer students to private and community agencies for additional services and resources
  • Serve on university-wide and divisional committees.
  • Represent Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs as needed.

  • Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report activities conducted.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written and electronic documents. Ability to communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.

  • Ability to effectively weigh and evaluate personal needs, client needs and the mission and policies of the university, and to respond and negotiate these competing needs as appropriate.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in psychological emergencies and/or crises.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills . Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills . Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents .
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling or social work; LPCC or LISW licensure; experience with PTSD, PDD, LD, and ADHD; outpatient experience in a brief treatment model working with emerging adults; experience providing culturally informed clinical experiences to diverse and underrepresented populations, including students from low socioeconomic status households, students of color, international students, and LGBTQIA+ students; a demonstrated high level of cultural competence and desire to work with under-served and underrepresented student populations; and a successful background check.
  • Must have at least two years of counseling experience, preferably on a college or university campus.
  • PhD/PysD psychologist; seven or more years of field experience; higher education experience; LICDC preferred.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background-check and drug-testing.
