A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic success. The Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor (Formerly University Counseling Director) shall have the primary responsibility of providing t he University Counseling and Support Services. The Counselor provides individual and group short-term counseling and crisis intervention to undergraduate and graduate students. This 12-month position also involves consultation with the Student Health Center and campus staff regarding mental health issues. Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, this position provides supervision of undergraduate and Master’s level psychology and counseling practicum students and consultation and outreach to the community.

Essential Functions:

The Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor will conduct intake interviews with students who request counseling services. Administer a variety of tests that may include aptitude, skills, and personality assessments. Provide alcohol and depression screenings . This position will also be responsible for maintaining follow-up contact with prospective students and their families.
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students on a scheduled basis or through crisis intervention.
  • Provides clinical supervision to practicum students.
  • Provides outreach workshops and lectures.
  • Maintains up-to-date clinical notes on clients and supervisees.
  • Consult with supervisors and staff as needed.
  • Acts as a campus resource on mental health and wellness issues.
  • Attends training seminars and staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Interacts with staff and students in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Refer students to private and community agencies for additional services and resources
  • Serve on university-wide and divisional committees.
  • Represent Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report activities conducted.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare written and electronic documents. Ability to communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to establish rapport with others is a requisite for healthy and therapeutic relationships.
  • Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to students and staff.
  • Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to effectively weigh and evaluate personal needs, client needs, and the mission and policies of the university, and to respond and negotiate these competing needs as appropriate.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in psychological emergencies and/or crises.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in counseling or social work; LPCC or LISW licensure; experience with PTSD, PDD, LD, and ADHD; outpatient experience in a brief treatment model working with emerging adults; experience providing culturally informed clinical experiences to diverse and underrepresented populations, including students from low socioeconomic status households, students of color, international students, and LGBTQIA+ students; a demonstrated high level of cultural competence and desire to work with under-served and underrepresented student populations; and a successful background check.
  • Must have at least two years of counseling experience, preferably on a college or university campus.
  • Ph.D./PsyD psychologist; seven or more years of field experience; higher education experience; LICDC preferred.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Power BI, SQL, LinkedIn Learning, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Familiar with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education and Banner financial system.
