The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking aNurse Practitionerfor a unique opportunity to work in a vibrant setting in an inpatient hospital and outpatient clinic setting both independently (after a period of supervised training and skills acquisition) and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary Academic Otolaryngology team focused on providing comprehensive care to adult patients with ENT disorders.

The Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in Bethesda was established in 2010 and has now grown to include 9 fellowship trained otolaryngologists providing cutting edge care in the National Capital Region. This NP will work with multiple Otolaryngology faculty at both Suburban Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bethesda outpatient clinic. This individual will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.

Essential Job Skills and Functions:

  • Under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies, this NP will evaluate patient’s health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Provides therapeutic patient care under direction of physician and in accordance with established protocols, will:
    • 1- Providetimely and high quality Otolaryngology consultation services of inpatients at the Suburban Hospital; and outpatients at the Bethesda clinic.
    • 2- Facilitatecompletion of overnight consults including faculty sign out.
    • 3- Facilitatehand-off of outstanding service duties after morning rounds including the assistance of the service team in completing patient-care and administrative task.
    • 4- Refinementof protocols and monitoring of quality and clinical outcomes towards service improvement. 5- Completion of perioperative, order sets and discharge instructions.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • A comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry Psychology, Pharmacology, Clinical Medicine, Radiology, Microbiology and Pathology.
  • The analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients and work in teams with physician attending Residents and nursing; instruct heath care personnel on procedures and treatment.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and make preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician.
  • Authority/Decision Making Level: Participate in the development of procedures for the department. Makes decisions regarding work processes based on established guidelines.
  • Prioritize and organize work to meet changing conditions.

Problem/Solving:

  • Uses defined procedures to accomplish work. Use specific body of knowledge to originate solutions to patient related problems.

Information Management:

  • Read and understand written physician orders, product directions and/or patient care staff notes. Understand and use hospital forms, requisitions, purchase orders etc.

Patient Care:

  • Provides comprehensive, age appropriate, and episodic care to patients as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Obtains patient history; Performs patient care and physical examinations; Prepares patient summaries;Develops care/treatment plan; Attends out-patient clinics and assists with patient management.
  • Provides information to staff regarding patient's care plan and condition.
  • Consistently develops effective care/treatment plan for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures.
  • Regularly confers and consults with appropriate supervisory physician and/or other pertinent professionals before implementing treatment plan.
  • Consistently structures all patient care plans to meet educational, physical and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.
  • Consistently provides relevant patient care information to the appropriate staff member according to department guidelines.
  • Follows daily progress of patients, including history and physical exam, ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory and radiological data and establishing and implementing a plan of care based on those interpretations and observations. Makes referrals to appropriate specialties.
  • Follows long term progress of patients including history and physical examination, orders and interprets re-staging tests, and assesses status.
  • Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment and medications in order to provide them with continuous information.

Provides Emergency Care:

  • Maintains CPR certification
  • Maintains airway, breathing, circulation
  • Starts and provides basic CPR
  • Orders and administers anti-anaphylactic and supportive medications.

Additional Competencies:

  • Although not required, fluency in other languages such as American Sign Language, Spanish, Mandarin or Russian is advantageous.
  • Must efficiently use the Epic electronic medical record system (after a period of training)
  • Must successfully complete all necessary Epic training courses and other applicable clinical software systems. Prior experience with Epic is advantageous.
  • Must complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
  • Scientific writing skills are valued.
  • Other computer or other special needs for the position: Operates personal computer and/or laptop to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Surgical patient care experience; preferred. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency: Additional experience may substitute for master's degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are also essential.
  • Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.
  • Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Experience in Surgical Nursing preferred but not required
  • Experience with the EPIC system is a plus.
  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

Work in normal patient care areas in an inpatient and outpatient unit. Exposure to hazards due to infectious specimen and contagious diseases, but potential for harm or personal injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Ability to concentrate during surgical procedure while assisting physician. Ability to walk throughout hospital. Plan to assess and deliver care to in-patient and outpatient on all services.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
