Job Description:

TITLE: Project Manager

DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services

BASIC FUNCTION: Fairfield University needs a talented project manager to join the Enterprise Computing team within ITS. This person will be part project manager, part department ambassador, part software tester, and part expert researcher. The project manager will work with a team of other analysts, developers, database administrators, network & system administrators, and our security team to use technology to solve our most pressing business and academic challenges. Sometimes this means designing and testing a new custom application, sometimes it means researching available off the shelf solutions, and sometimes it means extending the functionality of our student information system (Banner) or our ERP (Workday). It always means providing an exceptional level of customer service, tracking and reporting status accurately, and working effectively in teams and on your own. You should be a self-starter, willing to anticipate the next thing that needs to be done and doing it without having to be told. You are never satisfied with the status quo, believing there’s always room for improvement and you should be naturally curious and eager to learn new skills. It is essential that you can take a partially conceived idea with poorly defined requirements and turn it into a finished product that gets delivered on time and on budget.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, & EXPERIENCE NEEDED: The right candidate for this job has a bachelor’s degree and previous experience juggling multiple projects with competing timelines and priorities. He or she has a working knowledge of the software development lifecycle and agile methodologies, though coding skills are not necessary. A minimum of 5 years of prior IT experience is required and a graduate degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred. The ideal candidate is comfortable communicating up and down the chain of command and is skilled at translating technical jargon for non-technical stakeholders. This person should be a system-oriented thinker capable of seeing how various pieces of a project affect other department priorities. The ability to report the status of each project and the overall portfolio with a strong attention to detail is key.

REPORTS TO: Director, Enterprise Computing

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manage multiple projects within ITS while continually assessing project priority, resource availability, budgets, and risks. Use agile methodology to gather requirements, design a solution, document development sprints, plan testing, and commit to go-live events; involve all relevant stakeholders and ensure technical feasibility and resource availability to meet objectives Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget; ensure that project status is tracked and reported appropriately Manage project risks and escalate those risks to management in a timely manner. Develop risk mitigations strategies Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation including design specifications, requirements documents, test plans, and go-live sign-off documentation Create and maintain a dashboard showing the status (scope, budget, timeline, and risks) for all projects in the portfolio Create and deliver training for end users as needed Manage the relationship with all internal and stakeholders and model a professional attitude on behalf of ITS Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
