Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Registrar directs the daily operations of the Registrar’s Office including student registration and records, class schedules, instructional space assignments, graduation clearance, and other related matters. The Registrar also plans and develops strategies for maintenance and upgrading of academic information infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide innovative and forward-looking leadership and direction for the Office of the Registrar; hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all personnel.
  • Establish, lead, and manage all operational activities related to student records and degree progression, including registration, academic progress, transcripts, degree conferral, enrollment-status changes, degree and enrollment verifications, and class schedules.
  • Collaborate with the Provost, other University leaders, and faculty committees on the development and implementation of academic programs, policies, and procedures. Provide extensive Registrar-related support across all University units while building effective collaborative relationships with units within and outside of Academic Affairs; Serve as a key member of the provost’s Academic Officers team.
  • Implement nationally recognized best practices and procedures for the department and institution regarding student records, privacy, and reporting.
  • Research, understand, implement, and enforce institutional, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding student records to ensure the institution's compliance; stay well-informed of changes to these regulations and adapt accordingly.
  • Develop reports related to curricula, enrollment, and student performance and provide appropriate interpretations and predictions on these data.
  • Maintain and upgrade the University's academic information infrastructures including academic-record archives, curriculum and catalog software, online student database, room scheduling, and other electronic databases and information systems.
  • Respond to complex questions and inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and administration; use professional judgment to interpret policies and provide guidance to resolve student grievances and complaints.
  • Oversee and manage all activities related to the annual Convocation and Commencement events, including operational tasks and event planning.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with UM’s faculty senate
  • Manage and monitor an annual budget for the Office and monitor monthly expenditure against budget.
  • Employ innovative and collaborative business practices.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary range for this position is $80,000-$100,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five (5) years of related experience as Registrar, Assistant Registrar, or Associate Registrar, or in another administrative position within higher education providing knowledge of the responsibilities of the position or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated intellectual leadership in the broad areas overseen by the Registrar in higher education today, particularly those critical to maintenance of student academic records as well as student enrollment and retention
  • Ability to learn and apply the University of Montana’s requirements for degree completion, regulations, and consequences administered through FERPA, NCAA, VA, and other federal government agencies
  • Developed proficiency in providing guidance and supervision for the management, security, and preservation of academic records
  • Superior oral, written, listening, interpersonal, presentation, and mass communication skills necessary to establish and maintain professional, effective working relationships with culturally diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and constituents at the local, state, national, and international levels; to deliver effective, often persuasive, speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics; to generate collaboration and unity; and to actively engage campus constituents
  • Proven ability to plan, direct, and evaluate a complex team, using human and financial resources to accomplish the institution’s long and short-term goals
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in the use of current and emerging technology to address challenges of student-record activities and operations
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity as part of building a multicultural teaching and learning community, supporting the University’s strategic plan for diversity
  • Proven ability to think strategically, prioritize effectively, and act decisively
