The Center for Image-Guided Animal Therapy (CIGAT) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland is accepting applications for a full-time veterinary surgery technician. CIGAT provides specialized care and comprehensive advanced imaging and minimally-invasive procedures for companion animals throughout Maryland and the surrounding states. The veterinary technician will join a team of veterinarians, imaging technologists and visiting students to provide state-of-the-art care to veterinary patients.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Assistance with appropriate anesthetic techniques and minor surgical procedures for veterinary patients. The veterinary technician will assess animals prior to anesthesia. The candidate should have a complete understanding of the physiologic and pharmacologic principles of the medications and preparations used in the field of veterinary anesthesia, including medications for pain management. The candidate will participate in the preparation and execution of veterinary clinical trials and follow-up animal care utilizing knowledge of research laboratory skills, procedures, and practices. The candidate must be able to set up animal procedures, prepare linen and instrument packs, understand sterile technique, and be familiar with veterinary instruments and supplies. The candidate should be capable of performing procedures, such as intubation and venipuncture in companion animals. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining appropriate logs of animal procedures.

The veterinary technician will provide service under the guidance, supervision, and instruction from the veterinarians of the CIGAT. The technician will provide assistance to veterinary clinicians and investigative staff in their treatment of animals, teaching, or research functions. This position will also cross train with other technician positions throughout the hospital and fill in, if needed, in other areas.

Additional responsibilities include basic operation of imaging equipment (e.g., X-ray fluoroscopy, MRI, and CT), operating table, room setup, etc. The technician will be expected to restrain animals, prepare the imaging scanner rooms for use, prepare instrument packs, set up animal surgery, perform post-op animal follow-up, etc. The candidate will maintain inventory and supplies, and maintain the general cleanliness and organization of the facilities. The candidate must guarantee adherence to standards for JHU, JHMI, USDA, NIH policies, and Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Associate’s degree in veterinary technology
  • Some related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered veterinary technician (RVT) or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires some knowledge and experience with assisting in veterinary medicine and animal surgery.
  • The individual should possess some foundation in basic laboratory techniques.

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to assist with lifting companion animals weighing 50-100+ lbs.; lift dogs/cats onto tables and manually restrain them
  • Manually work with knobs and buttons
  • See sufficiently well to detect respiratory motions of the chest
  • Hear sufficiently well enough to detect soft heart murmurs.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
