Postdoctoral positions are available immediately for NIH -funded positions studying the molecular neurobiology of alcoholism. Ongoing projects include a mouse genetics study on mechanisms of ethanol analgesia and the study of prefrontal cortex Gsk3b in modulating progressive ethanol drinking behavior. Experimental approaches combine mouse genetics, behavioral studies, viral vector stereotactic gene delivery/deletion, pharmacology, functional genomics ( RNA -seq) and bioinformatics. Studies aim to identify gene networks and mechanisms underlying ethanol modulation of pain or ethanol consumption. Studies on Gsk3b include gene targeting approaches to identify the cellular and circuitry-level mechanisms of GSK3b action on ethanol consumption and to evaluate this gene as a target for therapeutic intervention.

The laboratory has been a leader in the combined use of functional genomics and behavioral genetics for studies on ethanol behaviors, and has developed novel approaches for genomic analysis and cross-species integration of mouse expression network data with genetic studies on ethanol behaviors. Dr. Michael Miles is Scientific Director of the VCU Alcohol Research Center which includes diverse investigators studying the genetics of ethanol responses across multiple species. Virginia Commonwealth University is ranked nationally in the top ten of NIDA / NIAAA -funded programs. The central Virginia area offers ample opportunities for affordable living, cultural and recreational opportunities, and easy access to the Washington metropolitan area. Salary will be based upon experience but will meet or exceed NIH NRSA recommended levels.
