CIRES/ NOAA CSL Instrument Software Engineer Professional Research Assistant
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences ( CIRES ) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking an Associate Scientist to join the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes (ACCP) group of the NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) . Within this group, the Associate Scientist will work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to design and implement data acquisition, control and communication software for a variety of custom research instruments that are used for laboratory and field atmospheric research, assist in instrument hardware development, and participate in the deployment of instruments during field measurement operations. The ACCP group builds and adapts instruments that we fly on airborne platforms ranging from small balloons and UAVs (drones) to large (e.g. NOAA P-3 and NASA DC-8 ) and high-altitude (e.g. NASA WB-57 and Global Hawk ) research aircraft to make aerosol and gas-phase composition measurements for studying atmospheric processes related to climate and air quality.
We seek an individual with experience and interest in data acquisition and control programming utilizing microprocessors and industrial controllers. A Bachelor’s degree or higher is required, preferably in an engineering field, computer science, physics, atmospheric science or similar, and the ideal candidate would have experience with electronics and/or scientific instrumentation, be able to communicate optimally and work independently as well as collaboratively within a group.

In the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, researchers build instruments to make precise measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to better understand how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate - and therefore people.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to develop and implement data acquisition, instrument control, and communication software.
- Assist in the design and construction of custom research instruments.
- Support maintenance of existing instruments.
- Support deployment of instrumentation during field missions (some travel required).

- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305, on a federal research campus. What We Require
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Atmospheric Science or related field
- Experience with programming for hardware (e.g. using C, C++, LabView)
- Able to travel for field deployments (occasionally, up to several weeks at a time)

- Excellent organizational skills and logical thinking ability
- Ability to work as a team member on multiple parallel projects.

- Analog and digital electronic's experience.
- Experience with the design and/or operation of sophisticated scientific instrumentation.
