Lecturer (Secondary Literacy Education) Dallas Site
Johns Hopkins University School of Education invites applicants for the full-time position of Lecturer (clinical faculty), with a focus on Secondary Literacy education, supporting our partnership with the Urban Teachers program. The position will be based in the Dallas area.
Through this partnership with the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, Urban Teachers offers a four-year teacher preparation program that results in the conferral of a Master’s of Science in Education degree with dual certification in a content area and special education. The mission of Urban Teachers is to prepare highly effective teachers who significantly accelerate student achievement in the nation’s highest-need schools by recruiting outstanding candidates, equipping them with state-of-the-art training, and linking their certification to their demonstration of effective teaching practices and skills.
We seek qualified candidates with expertise in the following content areas:
- Secondary Literacy Education
We are currently hiring for full-time lecturers to deliver coursework and provide coaching and mentoring support to program participants. Position hours are approximately 40 hours per week.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Urban Teachers Lecturers have practice-based responsibilities throughout the school year during the day as well as in the evening. Lecturers will:
- Teach program courses.
- Provide coaching support, give feedback, and evaluate participants.
- Attend professional development.
- Collaborate with colleagues.
- Work closely with Lead Clinical faculty and Director of Clinical Faculty to provide an excellent program for candidates.
Lecturer Responsibilities Include:
- Lead coursework by modeling best instructional practices, providing ongoing written and verbal feedback, supporting and grading assignments, and incorporating technology.
- Conduct ongoing observation and feedback sessions at program participants’ “host schools” (field experience sites).
- Evaluate participant performance through coaching visits to classrooms.
- Maintain appropriate data on all program participants.
- Contribute to the Johns Hopkins School of Education and the Urban Teachers professional communities, including posting work, uploading videos of course instruction, attending program meetings and required program professional development, and teaming with others in support of participants.
- Provide ongoing feedback on the quality of curriculum and programmatic support.
- Participate in personal professional growth in collaboration with Johns Hopkins School of Education faculty and our Urban Teachers partners.
A graduate degree (M.A. or higher) related to literacy education; PK-12 instructional experience in the content area; experience in urban public education as a teacher, staff developer, and/or administrator; extensive knowledge of the content and pedagogical content knowledge in the relevant discipline; skills in group facilitation and mentoring; experience with internship programs.

The interview process includes:
- Interviewing both on the phone and in-person with Urban Teachers site team, content team, and university program representatives
- Submitting a critique of a video of teaching
- Developing a course session plan on a core concept or topic
- Submitting a content assessment task

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
