Job Summary

This is a rotating monthly swing shift:
Mon-Thurs 2:00 pm – 12:00 am, Fri – Sun 12:00 pm – 1 am


This position will be working directly with the Emergency/Critical Care ( ECC ) clinicians and rotating intern doctors to help facilitate quality client care and patient flow through the IMC, ICU, and ER.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: oversight and training of professional veterinary students regarding care of animals, collection of specimens, and handling of animals; transportation and monitoring of patients requiring diagnostic imaging and assistance with obtaining images as needed; assisting clinicians with student examination, treatment, procedures, restraint, and sample collection; anesthetic monitoring for patient requiring minor procedures in IMC or ICU ; assisting in emergency triage and stabilization of patients through the ER; assist clinicians with set-up of critical patients as needed, including ventilator and CRRT patients; communicating with referring veterinarians as directed by ECC clinician; operation and monitoring of patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy; facilitating/coordinating consults with other specialty services; assisting with estimates, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks; other responsibilities as directed by clinicians. *This position will not be responsible for primary nursing care of ECC patients admitted to IMC or ICU .

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as a Veterinary Assistant or Technician, and assigned Levels I, II, or III . Salary range determined by eligibility for Level I, II, or III .

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Assistant requires:
A high school diploma or equivalent

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Technician requires:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Salary range determined by eligibility for Level I, II or III .
