Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Department of Surgery is the advancement of science through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

We are seeking an energetic and dynamic individual to head the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at VCU Health. This person will be responsible for setting the vision and transforming practice, research and education with an integrated plastic surgery residency in a premier program with active programs in micro surgery, reconstruction, comprehensive burn care, hand surgery, pediatric craniofacial and cosmetic surgery. This division is staffed by 7 surgeons and 8 nurse practitioners and physician assistants dedicated to providing the highest quality health care services. It is also home to the Evans-Haynes Burn Center, the oldest civilian burn center in the country. Verified as the only Level 1 adult and pediatric burn center in the region, the Evans-Haynes Burn Center provides interdisciplinary and holistic care for acute burns and the reconstructive needs of burn survivors. The division supports the very active level 1 trauma center and the Massey Cancer Center.

This position is a collateral, non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The faculty member should have clinical interests in microsurgery, complex wound management, burn care and general plastic surgery. In addition to chairman responsibilities, the faculty member will support the division in teaching responsibilities at the VCU Medical Center and the McGuire VAMC .

Position Responsibilities

This position will fulfill several urgent needs of this division:

Clinical
The faculty member will have clinical responsibilities in the care of the Plastic and Reconstructive patients on the MCV campus of VCU as well as community facilities. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Division and Department’s leadership.

Teaching
The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with direct oversight to the resident clinics both at the VCU Medical Center and the McGuire VAMC .

Research
The faculty member will establish clinical research projects with medical students and residents to establish evidence based practice outcomes in the areas of complex wounds and surgical education.

Service
The faculty member will serve on departmental and hospital committees as assigned and participate in regional and national professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

• Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
• Must be committed to resident education and teaching
• Must be committed to clinical research and innovation
• Must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

A strong interest in microsurgical reconstruction desired
