Position Title Organic Chemistry Lab Coordinator Overview

Teach, oversee, and direct the development of the assigned laboratory curriculum.

Essential Duties:

1. Supervise three/four sections. Evaluate lab reports, quizzes, lab practicals, and lab notebooks for the enrolled students. Evaluate the student work for lab sections to which they are assigned. Final grade assignments are carried out by the faculty who incorporate the evaluations into the overall grade for the class.

2. Work in conjunction with the Chemistry faculty on the experiments and assessments for the laboratory assignments each semester. Prepare the lab manual and ordering of all reagents and equipment for the experiments. Maintain records of needed changes in curriculum, prepare the schedule of experiments, and oversee any necessary make-ups due to weather/other cancellations. Conduct all necessary safety inspections of the organic chemistry teaching labs and support areas.

3. Ensure that all equipment, reagents, and pre-laboratory presentations are ready and in working order for each lab section. Maintain the organic instrument lab and instruments. Develop instrument usage protocols for the department. Arrange for proper clean-up and waste disposal for each lab section. Oversee chemical waste handling, reporting, and disposal for the department. Supervise two to four laboratory sections each semester and evaluate the student work to which the students are assigned.

4. Meet regularly with the instructors that are assigned to lab sections to ensure that they have familiarity with the experiments and that there is consistency in instruction across the sections. Select, train, and supervisor all undergraduate lab assistants for the sections assigned. Generally, one student teaching assistant (TA) will be assigned for each lab section and will work directly with the instructors.

5. Undertake trials of new experiments and may oversee student projects if they fall under the staff members expertise. (Much of this work necessarily must occur in the summer.)

6. Keep up with trends in chemical education through published materials and by attending conferences related to chemistry education. Serve as point person for organic chemistry education initiatives overseen by the Chemistry/Biochemistry department. Serve as a member of the Chemical Hygiene Committee.

Marginal Duties:

1. Performs all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required

• Ph.D in a chemical science, or a closely related field required from an accredited institution.
• Two to three years’ experience working in a college or university teaching setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in college level instruction preferred.
• Ability to supervise students.
• Ability to handle chemical materials in a safe manner and follow appropriate safety protocols.
• Strong computer skills for document creation and maintenance.
• Strong public speaking skills for lab presentations.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a group setting.
