The School of Art at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) occasionally has the need to hire Part–Time Lecturers (multiple positions) to start Fall 2020 to teach in its Bachelor’s/Master’s program in the School of Art. Responsibilities include delivering quality instruction in the program, advising students, and participating in scholarship activities serving the college, university or local communities as needed.

Teaching assignments include: Art Appreciation, Drawing/Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Foundation, Jewelry, Design, Studio Generalist, Ceramic, Photography, Computer Graphics, Graphic Design, Intermedia and Graphic Design. Candidates will be expected to have teaching experience and expertise in more than one area.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualifications to be considered as a part-time lecturer in 2-D & 3-D Studio include 18 graduate credits in a specific subject area and a Master’s of Fine Art. The qualifications to be considered as part-time lecturer in Graphic Design are 18 graduate credit hours in specific subject area and a MFA, ABD or PhD in a related field of study from an accredited institution.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

18 credit hours in a related studio area and experience teaching various studio and foundations courses, the ability to demonstrate strong technical skills in the teaching area, as well as use of related software specific to discipline. Part time lecturers hired to teach Art Appreciation will be required to attend training workshop in August (one day) on use of Blackboard and common online text. Inability to attend training may result in cancellation of assignment.

Preferred Qualification

Teaching experience is desirable, as well as ability to use technology to support teaching and learning. Preference is given to applicants willing to teach at both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses. University-level teaching experience preferred.

Salary Part-time Lecturers are paid per course taught commensurate with experience and/or qualifications. The appointment is contingent upon enrollment and scheduling needs of the Art program. License or Certification Required? No Number of Vacancies Multiple Desired Start Date 09/01/2020

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
