Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for a
full-time Lecturer of Spanish and Program Coordinator to begin June
2019.
This position is supported by a recently awarded
5-year, $2.7 million U.S. Department of Education Developing
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) grant. In Fall 2015, NSC
became a recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution and currently
serves a student population that is over 35% Hispanic/Latino. To
meet the needs of our growing Latinx student population, NSC is
expanding our course offerings for heritage Spanish speakers to
help strengthen students’ bilingual literacy. One goal of the DHSI
grant is to produce more Spanish-English bilingual teachers who can
meet the linguistic needs of Nevada’s increasingly diverse PK-12
classrooms.
This position is for a twelve-month contract involving
coordination of the emerging Spanish program and an instructional
assignment of 24 to 30 credits per year (depending on coordinator
duties). The preferred candidate, first and foremost, will be
passionate about teaching and fostering student success among a
highly diverse undergraduate student population. Primary teaching
responsibilities will include elementary and intermediate Spanish
courses for non-native and heritage speakers (with the possibility
to develop and teach additional courses). Coordinator
responsibilities (completed primarily during the summer) will
include supporting the Department of Humanities’ efforts in
evaluating curriculum for a Spanish minor and developing new course
proposals (e.g., Spanish for specific professions). The preferred
candidate will also collaborate with our School of Education and
DHSI team to support grant initiatives related to students’
bilingual teaching certifications. This may include developing and
administering Spanish placement and proficiency exams.
About Nevada State College
Founded in 2002, Nevada State College (NSC) is a
four-year public college located on a developing 512-acre campus in
the foothills of Henderson, Nevada (adjacent to Las Vegas). We
serve approximately 4,900 students who are highly diverse and
largely underserved; a majority of our students are first
generation, racial/ethnic minorities, parents, and/or returning
students. As a teaching-oriented institution, our faculty focus on
high-quality instruction, engaging learning experiences, and
innovative techniques to improve student learning. Our faculty
members enjoy the rare opportunity to mold the college as it
continues to grow into a cornerstone of higher education in
southern Nevada. NSC faculty work in state-of-the-art facilities
that feature “smart” classrooms and use the learning management
system Canvas to deliver online courses and supplement instruction
in in-person and hybrid courses. The average class size across
campus is 27 students, with most classrooms built to accommodate 40
students and online courses capped at 30 students. For more
information about NSC, watch
