Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Structural/Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor starting as early as Fall 2019. The successful candidate is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to establish and maintain a strong, externally funded research program, and to actively engage and contribute to internal and external professional service.

Basic Qualifications:

For all applicants, a Bachelor's degree in civil and/or environmental engineering or closely related fields, an earned Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering or closely related fields, and demonstrated expertise in one of the core areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering are required.  We seek candidates with strong interest in research related to resilience and sustainability of civil infrastructure and the built environment. Doctoral candidates will be considered, but must complete all the requirements for the doctorate degree by the date of appointment.

A major private research university situated in one of the nation’s rapidly growing research, innovation, and technology centers, GW has an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, distributed across the main campus in Washington, D.C., two campuses in the metropolitan area, and four off-campus centers.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at GW has been undergoing unprecedented growth in recent years. Within the past eight years, more than 45 new faculty members at all ranks have been recruited and more will be joining the School and the CEE Department this year. A new Science and Engineering Hall (SEH) houses most of the SEAS facilities at the main campus in Foggy Bottom, Washington DC.  SEH has approximately 400,000 square feet above grade with 290,000 square feet of assignable space for teaching and research laboratories. CEE Department maintains state-of-the-art laboratories in the fields of structural, environmental, and geotechnical engineering at the Science and Engineering Hall.

The CEE Department fosters a vibrant, multi-cultural, technological community of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students and has close ties with numerous government and industry research labs and institutes.  In addition to a Bachelor of Science program in civil and environmental engineering, the Department offers graduate programs in environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering as well as materials and mechanics leading to MSc and PhD degrees.  The CEE department also offers a five-year Bachelor/Master program in civil and environmental engineering. 

The CEE Department has several affiliated SEAS centers and institutes, in addition to its own laboratories, both at the main campus and the GW’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) in Ashburn, Virginia. Among these are the Earthquake Engineering and Structures Laboratory (including a six DOF shake table), Large Scale Structural Testing Laboratory (High Bay Facility: https://highbay.seas.gwu.edu/), and Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Laboratory, all of which have had extended sponsorship from government and industry.
