MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Communication by August 2019. Candidates in interdisciplinary fields with extensive communication training, teaching and/or scholarship will also be considered. A scholar with demonstrated capacity to launch and sustain a research program of quality in conflict and peace studies from a communication perspective. Applicants must possess demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level.

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have research expertise in conflict and peace studies and demonstrated ability to engage undergraduate students’ to broaden perspectives on the subject matter. Preferred areas of interest include one or more of the following: intercultural and/or international communication, dis/abilities studies, religious studies, science and technology studies, or queer studies. Preferred methodologies qualitative, rhetorical, critical and/or mixed methods perspective. Have preparation and/or experience to teach COMM 320, Conflict and Communication; and/or COMM 425, Communication and Mediation; and/or COMM 426, Dialogic Communication in addition to other core courses (i.e., COMM 100, Introduction to Communication; and/or COMM 300, Communication Theory) composing the curriculum. Demonstrated intercultural commitment and experience with diverse groups in teaching, research, and/or service is preferred.

DUTIES: The successful candidate will:

  • Develop innovative coursework in their area(s) of expertise;
  • Teach elective courses COMM 320, and/or COMM 425, and/or COMM 426
  • Annually: deliver one or more core courses in the Communication major specifically COMM 100, Introduction to Communication; or COMM 300, Communication Theory
  • Develop and sustain a research program that will lead to peer-reviewed publications and/or external grants
  • Engage in department, college, university, discipline, and/or community service
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with departmental colleagues to support the Department’s mission

  • Two (2) representative sets of teaching evaluations that speak to the applicant’s qualifications and abilities.

The department consists of 12 tenure track faculty and 16 lecturers who offer two undergraduate degree programs (i.e., one in Communication and another in Media Studies), and two minors (i.e., Communication and Critical Intercultural Communication) to over 850 students, in addition to many sections of Oral Communication (GEO 102) that serve the University. The new faculty will contribute to the program integrity and distinctiveness of the Communication Department as a whole, by building conflict and peace studies related curriculum that contributes to the depth of students’ understanding of the transformative power of communication and media, and their role in shaping how we think about and act in personal, organizational, cultural, social, and political life.
