The Problem Based Learning (PBL) facilitator will report to the
Foundations of Medicine Course Director. PBL Facilitators provide
curriculum development and teaching services in PBL sessions for
the Y2 Foundations of Medicine Course under the direction of the
Course Director.
Overview:
Quinnipiac University's School of Medicine invites applications
for Problem Based Learning Facilitators.
The Problem Based Learning (PBL) facilitator will report to the Foundations of Medicine Course Director. PBL Facilitators provide curriculum development and teaching services in PBL sessions for the Y2 Foundations of Medicine Course under the direction of the Course Director.
Facilitators are assigned to a complete organ system-based block and requires six hours a week. This includes five hours of teaching services by facilitating small group discussions of 7–9 students while fostering a student-directed learning environment and one hour in direct participation with faculty in preparation. Facilitators also assess students by evaluating student performance in small groups. In this capacity, you will be responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and school leadership to ensure a high quality educational experience.
Most weeks, PBL occurs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8am-10am and on Fridays from 8am – 9am. A mandatory Just-In-Time Training to prepare for the following week’s case takes place on Friday from 9am – 10am. Responsibilities:Facilitate Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions three times
per week during a block(s) for Year 2 Medical students in keeping
with the PBL philosophy (student-directed learning)
Prepare in advance for PBL sessions by reviewing the materials
on Blackboard and/or attending a Just-In-Time Training
Inform Foundations of Medicine Course leadership of late or
absent students in a timely fashion
Inform Foundations of Medicine Course leadership if there is a
student who is performing subpar with regard to preparation,
participation or professionalism at or before the mid- point of the
block so formative feedback can be given
Complete and electronically submit student evaluations within
one week of last PBL session of the block
Utilize university technology resources consistently and
independently, such as Blackboard, One45 and Microsoft applications
to facilitate PBL and evaluate the students at the end of the
block
Facilitate an entire block of PBL. Blocks typically last
between three and seven weeks
Strive to improve facilitation skills over time by reviewing
student feedback and making adjustments, if appropriate
Meet at least annually with the FOM Course Director to review
composite feedback of teaching performance
Complete the PBL Faculty Development Training for new
facilitators before beginning to facilitate a block of PBL
Adhere to the principles as outlined in the “Code of Conduct”
with special awareness that you are modeling professional behavior
for the students
Education Requirements:

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
Commitment to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the
academic community
