POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Assistant Professor of Social Work – Tenure Track

(One faculty position effective 8/16/2018)

 

Position Summary

The University of Alabama School of Social Work invites applications for one tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is a nine-month, full time, 1.0 FTE academic appointment scheduled to begin August 16, 2017. Responsibilities involve teaching (online and face-to-face), research (including sponsored research), scholarly activities, advising, field liaison and service. Faculty hired for this position will have the opportunity to teach across our bachelors, masters and doctoral programs  

 

We seek a talented and innovative scholar who is actively engaged in research and will bring depth to their teaching and service to the University, community and profession. As a community of knowledge builders, we are looking for a productive and creative colleague who, through scholarship, research and teaching, will bring new perspectives to the synthesis of practice, policy, theory and research.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Social Work/Social Welfare or related discipline (e.g., education, human development/family studies, or public health) and a MSW with a minimum of two years post MSW practice experience.  Candidates must have a strong record of scholarship, which includes published research in refereed journals and/or books. We are strongly invested in recruiting colleagues who, in their practice and research, demonstrate experience with, knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of culturally diverse and underrepresented populations and communities. Applicants should have an interest and expertise in reaching our diverse student body through online education, as well as in person.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants with a track record of grant writing and/or sponsored research and demonstrated competence in teaching face-to-face and online will be given extra consideration.  Although all substantive areas will be seriously considered, we are especially interested in applicants who have expertise in the areas of behavioral health, community mental health practice, military social work or social work practice with veterans. Post-doc experience preferred.

 

 

School of Social Work

The University’s School of Social Work, established in 1966, has an accomplished faculty of 24 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 11 full-time teaching faculty and 21 dedicated professional and support staff. The School has a long-standing internship program in Washington, DC and several international initiatives in locations including China, Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico, South Korea, Uganda and Ghana. The school enjoys good relationships with federal, state and local social service, health and educational agencies and institutions. We have a strong and vibrant alumni community.

 

Faculty have excellent support for research and teaching, including state-of-the-art computing equipment, multi-media classrooms, workload credit for research, a School of Social Work Office of Research and opportunities to work with nationally-prominent research colleagues. Residents are within easy driving distance to other fine destinations and regions, such as Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Smoky Mountains.

 

Compensation

Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation includes a benefits package with healthcare, reduced tuition rates and retirement. New faculty are provided a generous start up package which includes a discretionary budget, a graduate research assistant, priority opportunities to apply for university and school wide research funding, support for grant submission and administration, temporary reduced teaching schedule, and in-house library support. Summer teaching is typically available.
