General Summary/Purpose:
The Research Technologist willUtilizes solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with a specific area such as molecular biology, protein biochemistry and/or cell biology.This position requires experience in basic laboratory techniques in molecular biology and tissue culture and an ability to perform assay development independently.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Utilizes solid foundation in
basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques
associated with a specific area such as molecular biology, protein
biochemistry and/or cell biology.
Capable of exercising
independent judgment while participating in the planning of
experiments and evaluating and interpreting
results.
Will provide training to
other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory or Service
Center on a regular or temporary basis.
Following experimental
protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in
accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines. Sacrifices and dissects
animal remains as required. Prepares tissue for study utilizing
histochemical techniques. Maintains accurate data records.
Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g.
calibrating, alignment.
participate in the creation of manuscripts. Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment. Must be willing to work with mice. Uses various software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and /or test reports. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned

Defrost and de-ice freezers
as well as clean their condensers and filters, every 2 months or as
needed.
Clean and sterilize cell
incubators, biosafety cabinets, and water bath --biannually or as
needed.
Calibrate the CO2 level in
the cell incubators every 3 months.
Monitor and replenish the
humidity level in the incubators.
Monitor CO2 tanks and change
when empty.
Set up hypoxic incubator when
needed.
Coordinate equipment repairs
and maintenance:
Certification of biosafety
cabinets (annually)
Certification of anesthesia
vaporizers (every 3 years)
Calibration of pipettes and
balances (annually)
Preventive maintenance of
cryostat (new one only, not old one)

Maintain mouse
colonies
Maintain the lab
server
Request access for new
users
Maintain inventory of
chemicals, antibodies, and cells.
Update protocols and order
list.

Manage users and invoices in
iLab.
Ship biological samples and
dangerous goods in compliance with DOT and IATA
regulations.
Monitor and order lab
supplies, reagents, equipment, animals, and gas
tanks.
Coordinate lab safety and
animal inspections by preparing paperwork, lab areas, and personnel
for compliance.
Monitor the usage log, level,
expiration date, and safekeeping of controlled substances. And
obtain more when needed or if it has
expired.
Provide training and
orientation for new lab members
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
- Two years post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
- Master’s in sciences preferred
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective interpersonal communication, team work skills, open to work on new clinical research projects is preferred.
Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
- Must be able to sit for long period of time
- Must be able to climb at least 4 flights of stairs

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
