Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Assistant Director is primary responsibility for drafting and negotiating award Agreements under federal contracts, grants, foundation awards,commercial contracts and internal accounts.

  • Serves as authorized institutional signatory for outgoing subawards for SOM
  • Negotiate complex terms with subsites under Federal grants and Foundation awards
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc reports for the Director, Sr. Associate Dean and other University leadership.
  • Serves as team lead and supervisor of SOM Outgoing Subawards unit.
  • Serves as co-supervisor for Subawards Specialist and Subawards Associate under Oncology and Pathology, respectively
  • Develops and provides SAP and Subawards process training for department groups
  • Provides individualized Subawards process training for new department employees
  • Maintains the ORA web-based content on Subawards, processes and policy;
  • Represents University and School of Medicine in institutional, national and regional sponsored research work process and research administration training.
  • Develops, maintain and update department training manuals and correspondence
  • Serves as liaison between ORA and Office of Policy Coordination/Internal Audits/Purchasing/Accounts Payable/SAP Help for outgoing subawards issues.
  • Represents ORA on institutional committees and in meetings as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

Prior Assistant Director experience,

  • Advanced degree (PhD, JD, MBA) in related field and relevant specialized training
  • Master’s degree or higher,
  • Six (6) years of directly related bio-medical sponsored projects, contracts and/or research compliance administration experience, preferably involving NIH award mechanisms, non-profit foundations and commercial research agreements.

Preferred Qualifications

JD preferred, but not required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience handling issues of research administration compliance (e.g., human subjects, animal care and use, conflict of interest, intellectual property, costing, export control, FFATA reporting, etc.).

Solid understanding of the regulatory requirements contained in the Uniform Guidance as they pertain to subawards.

Experience with bio-medical research agreements and contract drafting/negotiation and sponsored regulatory environment preferred.

Experience should demonstrate past performance effectiveness, knowledge of the field and increasing responsibility.

Must be self-confident, articulate, oriented to assisting the faculty to acquire sponsored funding and comply with relevant regulations and possess exemplary customer service skills.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
