  • Earned Doctorate in Special Education or closely related field by August 2021. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires successful completion of all doctoral requirements by agreed upon start date.
  • A record of, or potential for, university teaching and service in addition to an active research agenda.
  • A minimum of three years successful experience teaching students with low incidence disabilities or related experiences.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Special Education Program within the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University is one of the largest in North Carolina with nine full-time special education faculty who offer BS and MA degrees in special education, an undergraduate minor in special education, and graduate certificates in autism and emotional/behavioral disorders. The program prepares educators to teach students with a range of disabilities and embrace learning processes that promote diversity and multiculturalism, as well as an ability to analyze how social justice intersects with our schools, especially as they are manifested on local, state, and national levels. The Reich College of Education comprises five departments (Reading Education & Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Leadership and Educational Studies, Human Development & Psychological Counseling, and Family & Child Studies, and graduates about 500 teachers a year.
