Job Description:

The Department of Neuroscience is seeking candidates for a Biological Scientist I position with experience in the field of animals models of human neurogenerative diseases. The Biological Scientist will be responsible for helping with the operations of many vital functions of the laboratory. The incumbent will organize and assist in managing a large colony of transgenic mice. Duties will encompass genotyping of transgenic or gene targeted models, behavioral phenotyping of murine models of neurodegenerative diseases, quantification of proteins using molecular or neuropathological techniques, and organization and maintenance of mouse colony records, database, tissue, and lab supplies.

Responsibilities to include:

Assisting in general laboratory functions including checking lab inventory, organizational efforts, and ordering supplies. The individual will help in maintaining the lab and lab stocks in an organized manner.

Animal inspection, including health status, records update. The individual must perform visual and/or physical inspection monitoring for onset of motor and other phenotypes on a daily basis. Cage card, lab notebook and spreadsheets must be accurately maintained. Assisting in animal surgical procedures.

Molecular and neuropathological analysis of data. Molecular and neuropathological analysis will be performed to assess neurodegeneration and molecular markers of neurodegenerative disease.

Running behavioral test on rodents. Behavioral tests will include digigait, manual motor and other motor tests which will be used to monitor the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Data preparation and preliminary analysis.

Expected Salary:

$15.00 - $17.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 1 year experience in the field of animal models of human neurodegenerative diseases.
Direct, daily management experience with mice involving husbandry of large animal colonies (>400 cages).
Experience in upkeep of colony records and/or organization of large tissue repositories.
Experience performing protein or RNA analysis.
Experience with euthanasia and mouse brain and spinal cord extraction.

Knowledge of mouse biology and genetic backgrounds.
Extensive experience with PCR genotyping of mouse models.
