The Department of Psychology has over 30 full-time faculty members and four staff. Our undergraduate program incorporates best practices put forth in the American Psychological Association’s Principles for Quality Undergraduate Education in Psychology.

The department offers a BA degree and a minor as well as two interdisciplinary minors: Neuroscience, and Applied Behavior Analysis & Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities.

Our graduate program offers a MA degree in three concentrations: Psychological Science and Neuroscience & Behavior with the goal of preparing students for doctoral study and Applied Behavioral Analysis with the goal of preparing students to practice as Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

The Department of Psychology also offers a PhD degree in psychology with three concentrations: Psychological Science, General Clinical, and Applied Behavior Analysis.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Department of Psychology within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW ), invites applications for a Neuroscience Research Technician starting January 2021.

This is a time-limited, benefits-earning appointment from date of hire through December 30, 2023.

The Neuroscience Research Technician provides oversight of shared resources, scheduling of undergraduate research assistants’ weekly hours, equipment maintenance, and completion of complex experiments according to procedures and techniques utilized in the neuroscience core facility.

Other responsibilities include executing methods and techniques of physical, chemical and biological tests, carrying out procedures, recording results, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and preliminary interpretation of results.

​The Psychology department is a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative department dedicated to excellence in our primary purpose – preparing students to become psychologically literate citizens with the skills necessary to flourish and engage in life activities that serve to advance scientific knowledge, solve problems and actively engage in efforts to improve our communities and beyond, the department looks forward to adding a Neuroscience Research Technician to the team.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

-Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work

-Ability to work and communicate effectively in a group environment and operate as part of a team to achieve the research objectives

-Ability to show competency in computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint

-High school diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

-BS or BA degree neuroscience field such as Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience or related discipline and at least one year of research experience

-Prior experience with flow cytometry, FACS sorting, cell isolation, genotyping, DNA and RNA purification, PCR and RT- PCR, protein assays, rodent surgeries, histology, and immunohistochemistry

-Prior experience with maintaining inventory as well as handling of chemical reagents

-Strong written and verbal communication skills

-Excellent organizational skills
