Eligibility for North Carolina licensure in Art.

College-level teaching experience.

Research interest or experience with differentiation and inclusion in art education.

Research interest or experience with early childhood art education.

Familiarity with edTPA performance-based assessment and/or student-teacher supervision.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Art Department at Appalachian State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art Education beginning August 2021.

The Art Education program at Appalachian State University is strongly rooted in innovative approaches to art teacher preparation that uphold commitments to emergent curriculum, collaborative relationships, diversity and inclusion, contemporary art practice, and interdisciplinarity. The BFA in Art Education course of study embodies a spirit of inquiry and exploration, with an aim to graduate visionary professional art educators who are radically caring, reflective, knowledgeable, responsive, and highly skilled in the artistry of teaching. Our vibrant community comprises approximately 95 majors in the art education program.

The Department of Art is NASAD -accredited and has over 40 full-time faculty members, over 700 undergraduate majors and offers BFA degrees in Art Education, Graphic Design, and Studio Art; a BA degree with concentrations in Art History, Art Management, and Studio Art; and BS degrees in Commercial Photography, and Graphic Communications Management. The Department of Art offers a range of travel opportunities including trips to the university’s New York Loft and study abroad trips to China, Cuba, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Spain.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This position encompasses teaching, research, and service activities that will support and grow the Art Education area. These activities include:

Teaching undergraduate Art Education studio-informed theory and practice courses.

Supervising students in field and internship placements.

Assisting with curriculum development, program planning, and student recruitment.

Actively participating in group and individual advising.

Promoting cultural competence within the program, supporting/mentoring diverse populations, and contributing to campus diversity efforts.

Participating in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession.

Representing the Art Ed program within the Reich College of Education.

Collaborating with area schools, programs, and university faculty.

Presenting and publishing research and/or creative accomplishments in art education.

Contributing leadership in the field at regional, national, and/or international levels.

Additional opportunities for the candidate may include: leading the National Art Education Association student chapter, teaching Interdisciplinary, Honors, or First Year Seminar courses, conducting national and international student trips, initiating community arts programming, and/or strengthening alumni relationships through professional learning programs.
