General Summary

The Ataxia Center Health Educator will be a team member of the Johns Hopkins University's Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorder Center. The Health Educator’s primary responsibilities will be within the Ataxia Center. The Health Educator will work with the movement disorders team including the Ataxia Center coordinator, Ataxia Center social worker, and will be responsible to the Director of the Ataxia Center. Responsibilities are in several areas including patient care; community outreach and education; community engagement; community collaboration; fundraising; and research. The Ataxia Center Health Education will be the key liaison to the Team Ataxia within the Pacing for Parkinson’s campaign and the Ataxia Center advisory board. The Health Educator will work in conjunction with the team of movement specialists with the goal of providing excellent patient care to individuals diagnosed with Ataxia and other related disorders. This will include working with patients with ataxia and their families, assisting the Director with determining the outreach and education needs of the ataxia community and how to address those needs, and direct interaction with patients and families at all ataxia clinics. The position will also include working with the Ataxia Clinic advisory board as well as the Ataxia Ambassadors student group. Finally, based on need, the position may also include assisting with various clinical research activities as well as occasionally assisting with other outreach activities within the Johns Hopkins Movement Disorders Center. The individual is responsible to the Director of the Ataxia Center.

Program coordination of various outreach activities to include:

• Planning, organization, and implementation of outreach and education programs

• Maintenance of mailing and email lists for communications

• Creation of web site in conjunction with web developer

• Serve as representative during community outreach events

• Create materials for brochures and presentations based on the audience

• Participate in the development of course modules

• Coordinate and lead varies outreach programs and Ataxia support groups.

• Participate in marketing Ataxia Center and movement disorder programs by providing information about the programs.

• Responsible for coordination and supervising of volunteers.

• Responsible for generating and distributing newsletters for the Ataxia Center (This communication will keep current patients informed and will be a resource for current and potential patients)

• Maintain data and records for the program

• Assist with Ataxia Center research coordination

• Assist with IRB submissions

• Performance of brief clinical and research-based assessments of patient’s symptoms

• Monitor recruitment and enrollment activities

• Implement protocols

• Maintain research records and regulatory documentation

• Assist in the preparation of grant proposals

• Coordinate, communicate, and collaborate with the larger movement disorders division and the other members of the ataxia team.

• Regulatory management of research protocols

• Database entry for research protocols and for keeping track of patients in clinic.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in health sciences or related field and some related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree with experience in community outreach and education.

  • Must have reliable transportation in order to fulfill outreach responsibilities.
  • Individual must process high degree of professionalism, confidentiality.
  • Must be able to identify needs, work as part of a large team, and resolve issues.
  • Must also be able to prioritize responsibilities with understanding of larger goals of the position and organization and must have ability to work independently.
  • Must be willing to work some nights and some weekends (average 9-10 Saturdays annually).

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
