Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Capital Construction and Renovations, the
Supervisor Capital Project Manager (SPM) will manage one or more teams of Capital Project Managers (PM) and Assistant Capital Project Managers (APM) in the Capital Construction and Renovations (CCR) branch providing advanced levels of project management services for various types of capital outlay construction and renovation projects for the university. Assigned projects span the project inception phase, through design and construction, and conclude after start-up, occupancy and warranty period. This includes the management of contracts, project budgets, schedules, and associated coordination/communication. Represent Virginia Tech during the design/construction process and serve as the owner’s primary contact. Manage and coordinate the project team (Architects/Engineers, consultants, contractors, stakeholders, etc.). Ensure design and construction optimizes university program goals, while conforming to the project’s established criteria for scope, cost, schedule and quality. Manage assigned projects and coordinate involvement of all participants in the design, value engineering, document review, construction, occupancy, closeout, warranty, and financial management processes. The SPM will provide guidance and oversight of projects assigned to the team(s).

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Building Construction; OR training
and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
Significant project management experience with comprehensive understanding of the various phases of design and construction, as well as the construction industry as a whole.
Working knowledge of complex site/building design with a strong emphasis on construction processes including major site logistics, integrated project delivery methods, project life cycle, life cycle analysis, and complex building components.
Proven ability to strategically provide recommendations and project management guidance ensuring successful projects to include negotiation, online collaboration, utilization of project management technology, and maintenance of records.
Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent major and minor projects with respect to technical, professional and fiscal issues.
Ability to work in and develop a team atmosphere and provide superior client service in a diverse environment.
Ability to interpret complex design/construction documents and effectively administer design/construction/consultant contracts throughout the project.
Ability to read/interpret construction schedules.
Basic knowledge of building codes and construction means and methods.
Proven track record for successfully managing and delivering multiple projects (new construction/renovation) in excess of $40 million (combined), or one very complex project with a total value approaching $100 million.
Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Registered/Licensed Architect or Engineer in Virginia (as defined by the Code of
Virginia), or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Design/Build, Design/Bid/Build, and Construction Manager-at-Risk construction experience.
Knowledge of construction delivery scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera, BIM/Revit, LaserFiche etc.) and Microsoft Office programs.
Prior supervisory experience managing employees and project teams.
Previous construction experience in a higher education setting
Previous experience working with the Bureau of Capital Outlay Management, a university building official, or similar offices.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, calendar year, restricted appointment which may be renewed annually. However, there is no presumption of renewal for this appointment. Continuation of this appointment, even during the initial year, is subject to the availability of funds, the need for services, and satisfactory performance. Faculty on restricted appointments are not eligible for severance benefits.
Work is performed both in office setting and also at construction sites which may
include inclement weather.
Must be able to travel to construction sites and traverse uneven terrain.
Must be able to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, reach, bend, climb, push/pull and perform repetitive motion primarily through use of keyboarding.
Must have a driver's license check and conviction check.
May be required to travel to non-Blacksburg work sites with overnight stay required.
As needed, may be required to be on construction site during off hours.
May be required to work additional hours or modified work schedule to meet the needs of the department.
