Job Summary/Basic Function



Maryville University is accepting applications for a Learning Designer or an Associate Learning Designer within the School of Adult and Online Education. The successful candidate will become part of an established learning design team responsible for partnering with faculty and Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to design and develop online course materials centered in student engagement and instructionally sound learning practices. The position will have a strong focus on enhancing existing materials through textbook, styling, and accessibility updates. Verifiable experience with Canvas is a plus. The successful candidate must be committed to fostering a culturally diverse atmosphere for faculty, staff and students.

Learning Designer Responsibilities :
• Work closely with internal and external partners to design and develop learning experiences for varied audiences through writing, editing, creating, and updating content, imagery, and interactive learning components)
• At the direction of design team leaders, updating content, imagery, and interactive learning components, relative to course needs, styling, textbook refresh, and accessibility
• Consult with University personnel and partners to determine learning needs; support the departmental SalesForce queue
• Research, recommend, and test appropriate media and methods for learning
• Participate in the review/evaluation/assessment process to determine course effectiveness
• Other relevant duties as assigned

Associate Learning Designer Responsibilities :
• At the direction of design team leaders, updating content, imagery, and interactive learning components, relative to course needs, styling, textbook refresh, and accessibility
• At the direction of design team leaders, work closely with internal and external partners to design build learning activities for varied audiences
• Consult with University personnel and partners to determine learning needs, support the departmental SalesForce queue
• Research, recommend, and test appropriate media and methods for learning
• Participate in the review/evaluation/assessment process with respect to course styling and accessibility
• Other relevant duties as assigned



Minimum Qualifications



Learning Designer

• Bachelor’s degree in instructional design or related area
• 2 or more years in an instructional design role with progressive responsibility
• Knowledge of current techniques, tools and procedures used in the design, development, and evaluation of technology-enhanced and online courses and programs
• Understanding of various operating systems, file structures, file formats, and protocols.
• Familiarity with graphic design elements appropriate for online instruction, including tools such as Office 365, SnagIt, Canva, Adobe Spark, etc.
• Working knowledge of HTML.
• Experience working with Learning Management Systems (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Canvas)
• Ability to use web conferencing tools (for example, Skype for Business, Adobe Connect, WebEx)
• Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment and meet and manage deadlines
• Understanding of competency and/or adaptive learning methods
• Strong research, content analysis, and content preparation skills
• Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with Subject Matter Experts, peers, users and media developers
• Excellent writing, editing, and course development skills
• Solid foundation in adult learning theory and universal design
• Must be able to make effective oral and written presentations
• Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be diplomatic and proactive while solving problems
• Must have the proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures and software programs

Associate Learning Designer

• Bachelor’s degree in instructional design or related area
• 0-2 years in an instructional design role, preferably in an academic setting
• Highly experienced with the teaching and development tools of Canvas
• Proven understanding of educational technology tools, applications, and techniques
• Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge of graphic design elements and tools appropriate for online instruction
• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and current online development tools
• Experience working with Learning Management Systems (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Canvas)
• Prior experience and understanding of third party and publisher tools within the learning environment
• Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment and meet and manage deadlines
• Understanding of competency and/or adaptive learning methods
• Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with deadlines
• Ability to work with design team leaders to understand project goals and implement design strategies as defined for a given project
• Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with Subject Matter Experts, peers, users and media developers
• Excellent writing, editing, and course development skills
• Solid foundation in adult learning theory and universal design
• Strong, effective written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated ability to produce clearly written learning materials and articulate key concepts in a clear, succinct manner
• Must be enterprising, diplomatic, and take the initiative to proactively solve problems or identify solutions and processes that meet unmet needs
• Must have the proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures and software programs



Preferred Qualifications



Learning Designer

• Master’s degree in instructional design or related area
• Experience developing e-learning solutions using common authoring tools (for example, Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate)
• Experience using Photoshop, Presenter, Dreamweaver
• Teaching experience
• Highly experienced with the teaching and development tools of Canvas
• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and current online development tools
• Experience working with diverse content and populations
• Proven experience coaching SMEs through the course authorship process.

Associate Learning Designer

• Master’s degree in instructional design or related area
