The Shumla Postdoctoral Fellowship provides one year of funding to
pursue an innovative research project studying Pecos River style
rock art in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands of Texas.
Shumla Archaeological Research and Education Center is a global
leader in rock art research and education, collaborating with
partners, across disciplines and internationally. The story of
Shumla began over 4,000 years ago when the ancient inhabitants of
the Lower Pecos Canyonlands began to record their sophisticated
myths and beliefs as painted murals on limestone canyon walls. In
1998, artist-turned-archaeologist Dr. Carolyn Boyd recognized the
value of these ancient murals and founded an organization to
preserve, study and share this important cultural record. Shumla
has become a center of archaeological research, heritage
preservation, community outreach and education for students of all
1. an active research program in the documentation and analysis of
rock art in Mesoamerica, northern Mexico, and the Lower Pecos
Canyonlands of Texas
2. a Ph.D. in archaeology at the time of application
1. fluency in Spanish
2. significant archaeological fieldwork and laboratory
3. familiarity with semiotics, hermeneutics, and other interpretive
strategies used to research meaning of prehistoric art
4. proficiency with Agisoft Photoscan, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
