DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

The College of Charleston announces a nationwide search to recruit a new Dean for the School of Science and Mathematics.

The College of Charleston, a nationally recognized public liberal arts and sciences university, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics. Founded in 1770 and located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College is one of the oldest universities in the nation and among the nation’s top universities for quality education and student life. Its beautiful and historic campus, combined with contemporary facilities, cutting-edge programs, and excellent faculty, attracts students from across the U.S. and around the world.

Over 9,500 undergraduates and approximately 1,000 graduate students at the College enjoy a small college feel blended with the advantages and diversity of a mid-sized, urban university. Students work closely with a committed faculty made up of more than 500 distinguished teacher-scholars. The city of Charleston – world-renowned for its history, architecture, culture and coastal environment – serves as a living laboratory for research and creative inquiry in the sciences, mathematics, technology, and teaching.

The School of Sciences and Mathematics consists of six award-winning departments (Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy). SSM offers fourteen undergraduate majors and six graduate degree programs as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering.

As of fall 2019, enrollment for the School includes 1,688 undergraduate majors, 164 graduate majors, and 133 roster faculty. SSM has relationships with partner organizations in the region, including other academic institutions, federal, state, and local governments, private sector companies, and nonprofit organizations which work with our faculty and students in many ways.

The School of Sciences and Mathematics seeks a Dean who will be a visionary leader, dedicated to the success of students and faculty. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly research, extensive experience in academic administration at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and demonstrated effectiveness in advancing diversity, equality and inclusion.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Sciences and Mathematics and reports directly to the Provost. The Dean must work effectively with other deans, department chairs, program directors, faculty, staff, students, as well as academic leaders and faculty in other institutions to further the School and the College’s mission and goals while also being actively involved in the cultivation of relationships and engaging in initiatives to meet the School’s fundraising and recruitment (faculty and students) goals. In particular, we seek a Dean with exceptional communication skills who exhibits proven experience leading diverse experiential programs and who will continue to foster interdisciplinary engagement between the School, other schools (within and outside the College), and a broad range of partners including those in research and the business sectors. The teacher-scholar model for our faculty has led to the School and its faculty attaining national recognition for critical inquiry and research, especially with undergraduate students. In addition to its notable undergraduate programs, the School features nationally recognized graduate programs with opportunities for successful leadership to further strengthen and cultivate new innovative learning experiences.

While applications and nominations will be accepted until a new Dean is selected, interested parties are encouraged to submit their materials to our consultant at the address below by February 28, 2020, to receive full consideration. Application materials should include a current resume/cv and a letter of interest.
