Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Neurology is to provide state of the art comprehensive patient centered neurological care for adults and children, perform translational and clinical research to further understanding of disease mechanisms and develop new treatments, and train the next generation of neurologists and clinical neuroscientists. The Department of Neurology is committed to enhancing diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This newly created leadership opportunity will ensure the highest level of patient care and outcomes, fulfilling VCU’s mission to improve the lives of children and adults with neurological disorders through compassionate, high-quality medical care and patient education.

Reporting to the Chair of Neurology, the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and Quality will lead the development and implementation of process improvements in clinical affairs and care delivery, and the strategic assessment of and response to quality and safety measures, while maintaining a clinical practice. They will share commitment to the highest quality patient care, as described by VCU Health’s Vision by Design. The Vice Chair role will be vital in consideration of the vision’s description of VCU’s “passion for quality, safety, education and research, while providing the most advanced medical care for the region.”

Position Responsibilities

1. Clinical
• Facilitate high quality patient centered inpatient neurological care, including promoting neuro-critical care, ensuring appropriate access to beds, the expansion of the epilepsy monitoring unit, and attention to other quality metrics.
• Work with the Neurology Service Line Director, the Vice President for Ambulatory Services, and nursing leadership to design and lead the ambulatory care team and evaluate the appropriate use of out-patient clinic spaces.
• Develop innovative approaches to enhancing access to neurological services including inpatient and ambulatory telehealth programs.
• Collaborate with department and health system leadership to evaluate and act on quality and safety data, including the expansion of departmental reporting tools and responsive action plans.
• Utilizing market data, explore strategic-growth opportunities in Virginia and the region.
• Maintain a clinical practice.

2. Teaching
• Provide exceptional education to students, residents, fellows, and the wider community of medical professionals.

3. Research
• Collaborate with the Chair and other stakeholders to develop and/or lead a neurology health services research program.

Required Qualifications

The Vice Chair must be a strategic thinker with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, experience leading change and process improvements, and the ability to listen and respond to a broad range of perspectives.

Additionally, they must have:
• An MD/DO, with residency training at an accredited institution.
• Eligibility for licensure in Virginia and board certification or board eligible in Neurology.
• A strong hospital-based clinical practice in Neurology and leadership experience within an academic health care environment.
• Strong administrative experience including in clinical care optimization, change management, process improvement initiatives, quality, and/or safety. An appreciation for and attraction to the importance of this work is central.
• A strategic orientation that looks to collect, analyze, and act on relevant data to make thoughtful decisions for immediate action and long-term plans in clinical operations and quality initiatives.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .
