Mission or Goal of Unit

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health needs of the communities they serve. Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

We are seeking candidates for this faculty position that will provide clinical and didactic instruction to the predoctoral and postgraduate students in the School of Dentistry. The faculty position will contribute to the research mission of the institution by participating in or leading collaborative or independent research endeavors. In addition, the position may support clinical patient care by participation in the faculty practice.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching:
The faculty member will have clinical and didactic teaching responsibilities within both the predoctoral and postgraduate programs of the Department of Periodontics, to include development and management of clinical and/or didactic curricular offerings in periodontics. Faculty are expected to develop and maintain academic and clinical curricula that reflect evidence-based advances in research, technology and changes in the oral and general health needs of the population, and to prepare students to self-assess their learning outcomes and allow them opportunities to individualize their preparation based on areas of strength and interest and future career plans. In addition, the faculty member may expect to be called upon to provide instruction in an integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required, and faculty are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression. Furthermore, the faculty member may provide research mentorship to dental students and dental residents participating in predoctoral research programs and the MSD program in Dentistry, and may participate in training of PhD candidates.

Research:
The faculty member will be expected to contribute to achievement of research advances by the School of Dentistry via collaboration with other faculty, both within the School of Dentistry and in other units of VCU, the extent of which will depend on the candidate’s expertise and experience.

Service:
The faculty member will be expected to serve the Department of Periodontics, the School of Dentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees and task forces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged.

Clinical:
The faculty member may provide clinical dental care appropriate to his or her training in the Faculty Practice facilities within the School of Dentistry.

Required Qualifications

• DDS or DMD degree or equivalent
• Completed advanced training program in Periodontics
• Eligible for licensure in Virginia
• Desire to participate in the School of Dentistry’s predoctoral and postgraduate instructional programs and to mentor future dental practitioners and demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability that incorporates adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
• Demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and discovery
• Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• Experience in teaching of clinical and didactic Periodontics as a trainee or faculty member

Preferred Qualifications

• Board certification by the American Board of Periodontology
• Research experience and training, or desire to participate in research as a collaborator with other faculty
• Desire and ability to serve as a faculty research mentor to trainees in predoctoral or postgraduate programs in dentistry
