Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Computer Science of the College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking faculty candidates to provide personalized attention in teaching, learning and service to all constituents and to advance discovery and creativity of the entire computational sciences community.

Position Responsibilities

The Department of Computer Science of the College of Engineering (CoEgr) at Virginia Commonwealth University ( VCU ) has multiple faculty openings at all ranks. As part of a premier research university situated in Virginia’s capital city, VCU’s computer science department has bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs and collaborates closely with many VCU schools and departments. VCU is a Carnegie-classified very high research activity university, and is one of the top 100 universities in the U.S. in federal R&D expenditures. The CoEgr is in an extensive growth stage. Since 2008 it has doubled the number of its faculty and is slated to open a state-of-the-art research facility in 2020. Embarked on rapid growth, the computer science department currently has 26 tenure-track, tenured and term faculty members.

Candidates should be qualified for an appointment based on excellence in publication, funding and graduate and undergraduate teaching. Well-qualified candidates in all areas of computer science will be considered.

-Teaching: Faculty member is expected to provide high quality instruction in computer science undergraduate and graduate courses and to develop new courses as necessary based on department needs.

-Research: Faculty member must establish a nationally recognized research program with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. All specializations will be considered. Junior faculty will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department and the College of Engineering. At the Associate and Full Professor levels, the faculty member should have a well-developed research portfolio with evidence of multidisciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise within the department.

-Service: The candidate will be expected to provide high quality service to the department, college, university and professional community.

Required Qualifications

•An earned PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field

•Relevant professional experience after receiving the Ph.D. degree (exceptions to this are those applicants who have received their Ph.D. in Software Engineering or Cybersecurity).

•Successful candidates at the Associate/Professor rank should have a well-developed research portfolio

•Candidates at the Assistant Professor rank should have demonstrated ability to establish, or continue an active, externally funded research program

Preferred Qualifications

•Candidates in all areas of computer science will be considered. Of special interest are candidates with experience in cybersecurity and software engineering.
