The Jay Kay Klein and Doris Klein Librarian for Science Fiction is responsible for the development, stewardship, and promotion of the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy and associated collections of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other forms of speculative fiction housed in the University of California, Riverside Library's Special Collections & University Archives Department.

Located an hour's drive to the east of Los Angeles, an hour west of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, an hour east of ocean beaches, ninety minutes north of San Diego, and an hour south of mountain ski resorts, UCR is located in an area of dramatic landscapes and rich cultural traditions. The University is a dynamic, aggressively developing land grant research institution dedicated to preparing its diverse student body to be successful competitors in the world marketplace of ideas. The UCR Library is a critical partner in preparing UCR's students to be globally competitive while simultaneously preparing them for careers in the Inland Empire and beyond. The UCR Library is a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems; and a dynamic and effective leader.

The UCR Library is comprised of three facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 214, including 26 FTE librarians, 90 FTE support personnel, and 98 students in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomás Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC's more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC's California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.

Reporting to the Director of Distinctive Collections, the Klein Librarian will professionally participate and work in partnership with the highly collaborative team of professional librarians and archivists, which comprise the Special Collections & University Archives Department. The Klein Librarian will interpret and set priorities for the Eaton Collection within the Department's and the Library's collection development strategies; will represent the Eaton Collection within the broader community of faculty, students, scholars, librarians, rare materials dealers, collectors and the public; will provide specialized reference and research services and support for Eaton Collections users; and interpret the collections for diverse audiences through exhibitions, public presentations, and instruction. Public outreach is an essential activity in this collaborative environment.

• Serves as subject specialist/selector for science fiction, fantasy, horror and other forms of speculative fiction. Acquires general and special collections resources for the UCR Library in accordance with collection development policies.
• In collaboration with the Director of Distinctive Collections, oversees all operations of the Eaton collection and fosters the use of the Eaton Collections in teaching, outreach and research.
• Collaborates and coordinates with appropriate members of the Special Collections & University Archives team and Metadata Services to ensure all Eaton collections are processed, described and discoverable according to current best practices guidelines and national standards.
• Provides specialized reference assistance to students, faculty, visiting scholars and the general public.
• Works with the Assistant University Librarian for Content & Discovery, the Director of Distinctive Collections, subject selectors, faculty and other stakeholders to identify collecting priorities and new areas for collections development.
• Actively engages with UCR faculty and specialists on campus to align collection development activities with the University's academic mission, currently identified areas of research activity and perceived new focus areas of emerging research development.
• Coordinates and collaborates with Special Collections & University Archives team members to develop and provide a program of public services outreach to members of the UCR campus and Riverside community at large.
• Coordinates and collaborates with Special Collections & University Archives team members to develop and implement an Eaton collection management review process, stacks maintenance tasks, inventory legacy collections and a preservation assessment.
• Identifies, seeks out and creates opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaborations with colleagues, faculty, students, researchers, current and potential donors and the Speculative Fiction community at large.
• Represents the Eaton Collection and the UCR Library on standing committees and ad hoc groups as appropriate.
• Serves as the primary advocate and representative of the Eaton Collection to the University community and to external organizations and individuals as appropriate.
• Collaborates and coordinates with the Director of Distinctive Collections and the Library Development team to develop a robust program to engage, cultivate, and steward donors and other supporters to identify, solicit and encourage gifts from prospective donors.
• In collaboration with the Director of Distinctive Collections, establishes professional and ethical working relationships with antiquarian book dealers and other providers of subject and genre related materials pertinent for inclusion into the Eaton collection.
• Participates in the UCR Library physical and digital exhibition programs.
• Collaborates with colleagues on digitization, and digital projects involving Eaton
Collection materials.
• Coordinates and collaborates with relevant departmental staff and members of the
Preservation Department's staff to identify and implement appropriate conservation
treatment activities for Eaton materials as indicated.
• In collaboration with Special Collections & University Archives staff and team members,
provides advanced level reference service to assist researchers, students, faculty, staff and the community in identifying and using Special Collections and other library materials as indicated or requested.
• Participates in the weekly professional staff reference rotations.
• Participates in general Departmental, Library and professional activities as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:
• Masters of Information Science or Master of Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent; or an advanced degree in literature, comparative literature, cultural studies.
• Minimum five years' experience in a rare books and/or special collections department in an academic or research environment.
• Subject proficiency in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and/or other forms of speculative fiction as appropriate to support the development of the Eaton Collection.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with professional standards and practices for accessioning, processing, cataloguing, digitizing, curating and preserving special collections materials.
• Demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating and stewarding donor relationships, and expertise in gift-in-kind donations.
• Familiarity with current scholarship and research methods involving the use of rare books, manuscripts, and other special collections materials, including photographs, media and realia.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects.
• Proven ability to work under pressure.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment within a diverse and complex organization.
• Demonstrated participation in exhibition development.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and manage outreach programs.
• Experience teaching with and interpreting Special Collections in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated highly effective oral, written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in an
intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds, including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty donors and alumni.

• Strong interpersonal, customer service and facilitation skills.
• Familiarity with legal and ethical issues associated with working with donors.
• Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with digital content acquisitions and curation especially within a Special Collections or archival environment.

Preferred qualifications:
• Knowledge of one language other than English.

• Demonstrated experience providing reference services.
• Familiarity and working knowledge of Aeon
• Familiarity with and working knowledge of a variety of contemporary social media platforms.
• Working knowledge of software and systems that support services to patrons, including integrated library systems (ILS) and other systems used in academic and research library settings.
