Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Exceptional Children’s teacher will play an integral role in developing a robust academic program for students in a self-contained classroom. They are expected to guide students in their social, emotional, and academic development.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and implements an instructional plan to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program ( IEP ) plans for students, including present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP .
  • Uses diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed.
  • Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Delivers instruction using appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Follows state-mandated due process procedures and functions.
  • Monitors student behavior, maintains discipline, deescalates inappropriate behaviors, teaches appropriate behavioral strategies, and restrains students when necessary in accordance with established laws and regulations.
  • Assists students with disabilities with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.
  • Collaborates regularly with regular education teachers to ensure students are receiving appropriate classroom accommodations and to help teachers understand student IEPs.
  • Communicates with parents regarding their child’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
  • Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students; consults with community resources, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina’s policies governing services for children with disabilities.
  • Complies with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Interacts effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and community members.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.
Suggested Salary Range NC public schools salary scale. Minimum payment will match current salary. Physical Demands of Position

Typical physical demands of a position within a classroom environment including, teachers must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Will need to be able to move comfortably, from standing to sitting to working on the floor, in order to interact effectively with the children.
